Ruby Anne From Off, but Adair Countian through and through Grandpa Charles Miller writes: I don't know how many of your readers remember February 9th, 2008, when my granddaughter, Ruby Anne Miller, was born at Westlake Regional Hospital, but I surely do. Ruby was born at about 24 weeks and when she arrived at Kosair Hospital in Louisville, she weighed only 1 pound, 3 ounces. She is rapidly approaching her third birthday and is not experiencing any of the typical problems associated with premature birth. We are eternally grateful for the emergency room staff at Westlake, the Adair Ambulance Service which transported her to Campbellsville Hospital, the airlift team sent from Kosair and Kosair Hospital. Ruby spent three months in Louisville and God answered the prayers of his people from all over the country and she now is surpassing all of the typical milestones for non-premature births. Ruby Anne Miller "from off," but she is an Adair Countian through and through. Thanks for letting me vent. Majority of native Adair Countians, since 1986 now Amish? "Jim" comments on the low number of natives anymore; or conversely, on the high percentage of people technically "From Off," on the day they enter the world: Ed, I went back and took a closer look at the 1986-1999 births (the most current abstracts to which I have access) and was somewhat amazed what by what I found.A note: Adair County has not had major local obstetrics services since Adair Memorial Hospital closed over a half-century ago. "Jim," and I are taking the technical view of the situation in starting to acknowledging that Adair County is becoming indeed, a Nation of From Offs, with no comment on whether that is good or bad. It's just that it would be nice, were the priorities on health care as much a priority, if we considered some form of of baby delivery in Adair County, somewhere on the continuum between high tech and high touch, as Rowan County, KY offers. 2011-01-06 09:52:58 | Comments | Printable version
Posting tax returns early can help with college financial aid Denise Fudge, LWC VP for Education Outreach and Student Financial Services says early start on applications, with taxes already filed, can affect success in some situations By Duane Bonifer Columbia, KY - It's an annual spring ritual for many Americans to wait until the last minute to file their tax returns. But families with college-bound students could lose out on financial aid if they wait until April 15 to file this year. "If you plan to attend college in the fall of 2011 and hope to receive financial aid, you should get your taxes done as soon as possible," said Denise Fudge, Lindsey Wilson College vice president for educational outreach and student financial services. JIM: 110 years ago: Adair County meets the new century A magnificent account of how far Columbia and Adair County have come in just 110 years. Some things were similar: There was a great religious fervor, the town treasury, similar to the city and county's of today, was well 'ahead of the hounds': And there is a news account of brain replacement surgery, in 1906 or so, following a muzzle-loader mishap. Jim's personal favorite column, and we wouldn't want to argue that point. -EW By "Jim" Happy New Year, Adair County! For those of us who are grey (or white) of pate, it's hard to believe the second decade of the 21st century has dawned. No doubt, a similar thought crossed the mind of many an Adair Countian on January 1, 1901 with the arrival of the new century. One must wonder how a then-citizen of Columbia or Ozark or Breeding or White Oak or Bliss would react to the Adair County of today.
