Poetry by Robert Stone: Past, present, and future

Past, present, and future- a villanelle for the birthday of Lisa Comperry
Fast waning past refuses to stay dumb
with memories dark spotting whitewashed page
and present clings while future beckons come.

No doubt that joys uplift and sorrows numb
and gentle passions silenced silent rage.
Fast waning past refuses to stay dumb.

No doubt that each tomorrow beats its drum
and promises a better golden age
and present clings while future beckons come.

No doubt that gay and bright can conquer glum
and well fill up each unexpected stage.
Fast waning past refuses to stay dumb.

No doubt that every revel leaves a crumb
and hints of wasting with no thought of wage
and present clings while future beckons come.

The weak before the mighty rules of thumb
sit satisfied in self-made unseen cage.
Fast waning past refuses to stay dumb
and present clings while future beckons come.

- Robert Stone, 31 December 2010
The next earlier poem by Robert Stone is A Psalm for Christmas Eve. Psalm 96: Each Day A New Song

Southern Kentucky could be the pear capital of the country

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I'm telling you we could be the pear producing capital of the world. Our climate is absolute perfect for producing this "old-time pear" and if you don't bruise it, it will keep forever in cold storage.

In a few years Southern Kentucky could be to pears what Central Florida is to citrus.

Adair County does need to make it our "National Tree." -BJF

Pear Tree Chronicles, Album: 2010 in life of century old tree

Jim and Sharon Whitehurst spied the old timey pear tree before they bought the Haskell Rogers place in Gradyville, KY, from J.M. Shelley. She kept a diary of the tree through 2010, from its leafless winter stage through spring glory, the summer, and the fall fruit, to finally, the treasured tree in late fall, leafless and looking vulnerable, but loved, just the same.
Click on headline for full story plus over 15 photos

By Sharon Whitehurst

Haskell Rogers believes that the pear tree is at least 100 years old. Haskell told us that his family moved to the Gradyville neighborhood from Metcalfe County when he was a boy and the pear tree was already a noticeable landmark.

He calls it an "old-timey pear", a name which I have heard when speaking with a number of older area residents.

Map to quality education drawn by us all

Comments re article 41472: Better Education versus The Best education

By Billy Joe Fudge

Once again I am in awe of Ralph's observations and comments. The comments are "spot on" concerning a quality education, quality teachers, motivated teachers, tax money, and pushy parents. Yes Ralph, I agree with your idea that the map to a quality education is drawn by more than just parents, just teachers, and just administrators; it is drawn by all of us.
