JIM: Only seven births on Jan. 1 from 1951-1960

We interrupt ColumbiaMagazine.com to bring you this information:
New Year's birth are rare, indeed. I just checked the Adair County vital statistic records and found that for the ten-year period 1951-1960, there were 2,267 recorded births in Adair County. Of that number, only seven (five females, two males) occurred on January 1st, an amazingly scant 0.31% of the total, or exactly one-half of the statistical per diem birth rate for the time frame.

Another interesting but completely useless bit of trivia: only two of these seven New Year's Day births occurred in odd-numbered years. 1953, 1955, and 1959 got skunked, along with one even-numbered year, 1952. There were two January 1st Adair County births in 1954. -JimWe now return you to your regularly scheduled program, already in progress. -CM

Scouring the land, one more New Year baby found

It's seems harder and harder to find more citizens who are bona fide New Year's Day babies in the 7-county area, but Jim, with his bulldog tenacity, his great store of knowledge, his willingness to endeavor to persevere, has found a jewel:
Ruth Eleanor Stevens Brock was born on New Year's Day.

She's a Montpelierite by heritage and a longtime resident of the Sacred Triangle by choice.

It's damn tough to have better credentials than that for entry into that glorious Mansion in the Sky. LOL!! -Jim
That may be it. We hope not. Maybe there are some more anniversaries. Maybe not. There is still more than 30 hours before the New Year arrives. With perseverance, with endeavorance, maybe a few more names will be added to the list. Possibly even one more with Montpelierite and and Sacred Triangle credentials. Thanks to all who are undertaking this all important research. -EW

JIM recalls outlook of editor Charles S. Harris

'The local paper, rightly directed, is a power for good. It takes time, talent and determination to build a local paper of merit and broad influence.' -Charles S. Harris.

By "Jim"

Whether the cause du jour was good roads, more bridges, increased commerce, modern conveniences, or advanced educational opportunities, the News stood foursquare for it, sometimes in the voice of a wise uncle, sometimes in that of a stern parent, sometimes--ofttimes--in that of the shrewd businessman pointing out the monetary advantages, sometimes cajoling and sometimes shaming, but always, always, in favor of progress. (From Hope to Hilltop, p iii; used with permission.)

Around the middle of the 1880s, Charles S. Harris, a native of the Old Dominion, removed to Adair County. Not long afterwards, he met, wooed and wed young Miss Maggie Murrell, and they were made as one in the late summer of 1887. Almost exactly a decade later, he started the Adair County News with a handful of subscribers and a heart brimming with optimism.

Mentoring program could help where homes don't

Mentoring program advocated by Dr. Bob King could help Adair County students who don't have the educational support they need, at home. Dr. King and Rep. Bam Carney have offered to assist local efforts
Comments re article 41463: Money helps but education begins at home

By Linda Waggener

Thanks to Doug McCammish for picking up on Educational needs to keep the discussion going! We are in agreement that it starts at home, except for the many students who don't live in a home where there are two parents and where there is time to focus on education.

High performing low income students who live in homes without the parental educational abilities are not getting the help they need.

John Halsey adds item to Ralph Waggener commentary

John Halsey writes:
As usual the Ralph of the Waggener clan is spot on!

I would add one tidbit to his comment regarding the childless having to pay for others education. That should go without saying, However it also seems axiomatic that the burden should not rest solely on the backs of the minority who are property owners. The opposition to the "nickle tax" would not have been nearly as strong or effective if the cost was spread evenly throughout the community.

I understand that this is another strong argument for Mr. Waggener's call for upending, ejecting and eviscerating the K-DOE, which placed such a pig headed requirement on the local communities. -John Halsey

Better Education versus The Best education?

"We need to increase incomes in Adair and better education is a very good start,' writer says. Parents are a key to better education. But that's not all. 'A well-rounded education takes money, time, and energy and involves parents, teachers, and educational leaders. To improve education, it will take the whole of Adair County, working together,' he says, and notes efforts hamstrung by cumbersome bureaucracy resulting in inflated construction costs and needless delays imposed by Frankfort. Our guest commentator calls for complete overhaul of the Kentucky Department of Education, from top to bottom, a suggestion which should elicit a chorus of Amens. -EW

By Ralph Waggener

A good education is something we All need. The biggest problem is with getting more people to understand the difference between Good and JUST AN EDUCATION yes there's a big difference on the skills of the educator and the quality of learning.

Lots more birthdays, anniversaries at this time of the year.

This morning, reading the end of December entries, it's noticeable that a number of people got married on December 31; we're hoping that all the anniversaries which should be listed are, but if not, please send.

There's also an effort to make sure that everyone born on New Year's Day is posted. That seems a special distinction. You're invited to look those over, and send any we don't as yet have.

If you're sending a birthday, you might want to look at the main "Birthdays and Anniversaries" list to see if a birthday needs updating or needs to be added. That list, at Birthdays and Anniversaries is posted in two month intervals. Right now, we're posting for December 2010 and January 2011. The page is now easier to read, with names in alphabetical order by first name, with anniversaries first, birthdays second, and then the list of loved ones who have passed on.

Send Anniversaries, Birthdays, and In Memory Birthdays using any Contact/Submit button.
