Comments on Essential Edifice of Yesteryear

Robert Stone found these lines from a little Poem, from bygone recollections:
Oft times in dead of winter, the seat was covered with snow.
'Twas then with much reluctance, to the little house you'd go.
With a swish you'd clear the seat, bend low, with dreadful fear
You'd blink your eyes and grit your teeth as you settled on your rear.

Elm is tough wood, especially trunk chunks

New Englanders favor maple, beech or ash

Sharon Whitehurst writes:
Jim agrees about the toughness of elm wood. He says that the larger limb wood from this tree has been agreeable to splitting, but the large chunks from the trunk have taken some muscle. Fortunately Jim enjoys "working up" a wood supply!

In New England our favorite firewood was maple, beech or ash. -Sharon

Comment: Heavy investment needed in education not just money

John Halsey writes:
Great to see that someone with experience in the field offer practical and thought provoking analysis of the state of Kentucky education. I am sure everyone is aware that Kentucky is not alone in the dismal results derived from the current system but it is just as important to realize as Bob King points out that we should be deeply ashamed of the job we are doing for and to our young people in Kentucky.

I was also heartened to see that he is urging a heavy investment to turn the situation around but rather than falling back on such emotional "easy fixes" such as throwing more money at the problem, he is instead calling for an investment of time, thought and effort. I did not see any mention of more money being required as a fix but more of a clarion call for all Kentuckians to get involved to resolve what is becoming a national crises.

Just as "all politics are local" so are unique situations in each school district. However, until we address the issues raised in the guest editorial we cannot hope to achieve any real progress no matter how fine of a building we put our students in.

Falling back on School Boards, Administrators and teachers has not and cannot provide the corrective actions required. Not only land owners who will alone bear the "nickle tax" but also parents and anyone who works in or lives in Kentucky has a vested interest in working to correct what is not only a national scandal but one of the biggest problems affecting the future of this country.

Thank you for printing Mr. King's commentary. -John Halsey

KSP plans major crackdown on drunk drivers

'KSP has a 'no-tolerance' policy. If you are caught driving under the influence, you will go to jail' -COMMISSIONER RODNEY BREWER

By Tpr. John Hawkins
Submitted by TFC Wm. Gregory, KSP Post 15, Columbia, KY

KSP is gearing up for the New Years Eve holiday, which is traditionally a time for festive events where people gather to ring in a new year. Many of these celebrations will include the consumption of alcohol, lending way to the potential for impaired drivers on Kentucky roadways.

Every year law enforcement officials make a plea to those who drink to stay off the roads. While drunk driving is a terrible crime any day of the year, statistics show that the holiday season has the greatest incidence for crashes involving alcohol.

Comment: America prospers when it invests in education

Linda Waggener, city council member, writes:
"The wealth of America is directly related to the investment our country makes in educating its people."
That's one of the main points I remember hearing when Dr. Robert King spoke at Campbellsville University earlier in the year. He said that from his research, results are clear that when America invests in education, as in the GI Bill, the country flourishes. He also pointed out that the lack of investment in its citizens may be the real reason for the resulting lack of jobs in the country today.

King gave these numbers that the Department of Education is working on improving:
  • 800,000 of the 4.2 million people in Kentucky do not have a high school diploma,
  • 500,000 of these are working age adults who started a program and never finished it,
  • Approximately 536,000 adults, 21 percent of the working-age population, age 18 to 64, lack a high school or GED diploma.

Johnietta Jessie corroborates B.J. Fudge history account

She remembers the whole Gibson family and sawmill employees rebuilding the trail to construct Gibson Road to get folks down to Westfork. Carolyn Jean Gibson amazed Johnnietta's dad with her bulldozing skills

Commentary re article 41431: BJ Fudge Gibson family built Gibson Road

By Johnietta Jessie

B.J. Fudge is right about Gibson Road.

I was raised in Breeding and my father tended tobacco for Albert (Bud) Gibson for several years.

There was a road already there, but it was very steep and very crooked.

I can remember as a child traveling the road because my grandfather lived on down Westfork before you get to the Robbie Lacy (who was also my great-aunt) farm.

Bud and his children Freddy and Carolyn Jean along with other family and employees rebuilt the existing road making improvements.

My dad was amazed because Carolyn Jean ran an earth mover while working on the road. She also drove a tractor and trailer when they took the tobacco to the market.

Huge elm: Tough to cut, even harder to split

Huge old elm a challenge, even for logger from Vermont

Actually, he's now from Gradyville, but he was professional logger in Vermont, and he says the the Shelley farm tree was one of most difficult he ever felled. It took over 3 hours, and took lots of logging equipment, with the coup de grace delivered by a 20 ton hydraulic jack.

My husband and I had an adventure, which I documented and which is ongoing: Removing a dying old elm, a giant of a tree, from the J.M. Shelly farm in southern Green County.

It's been interesting, for us, to say the least.

Sue Page Lacy: Role model, special family friend

Lea Ann Parnell writes:
I never had Mrs. Lacy as a school teacher, but I have known her for 25 years now and she has taught me so much. I met Mrs. Lacy and her family when my Daddy became the paster of the Sparksville Nazarene Church. She is such a special lady. When I think of the role models in my life, she is definitely one who comes to mind. No matter what she is facing in life, she always has a hug and a kind word for me. Through the years my family has spent many blessed occasions with the Lacy family. I love her very, very much. Thanks for teaching me so much, Mrs. Lacy. God bless and Happy Birthday. -Lea Ann Parnell

BJ Fudge: Gibson family built Gibson Road

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
According to my memories, Westfork Road continues on up Westfork Creek to the family farm of Delpha Dulworth.

The reason the road that comes off Greenbriar Ridge Road down to Westfork Road is Gibson Road is because the Gibson family built that road to have better and quicker access to Greenbriar Ridge Road and the Breeding area. I believe they built that road back in the late 60's or early 70's.
