The Doc: Herons sit in trees. Goats go to porch rooftops The Doc has a soft spot for herons. Yes, they do sit in trees. But seeing a goat on a roof top on Hwy 76 made him question whether he saw what he saw. Comments re article 41275. Letter: The Heron in a tree phenomenon by The Doc, Roger D. Smith, DMD I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Great Blue Heron. I even call our dining room the Heron Room because of my Heron prints occupying the walls. This, I admit, is to the dismay of my wife. But, yes, Herons do sit in trees. Many days in the duck hunting bottoms of Casey Creek I've watched them sit high above the creek watching and waiting for a meal. The uniqueness of this photo is that I seem to have always seen them in bare trees with big limbs and not bushy trees. Further, on the subject of climbing goats, I will never forget the morning I was heading down Hwy. 76 at dawn (again a duck hunting trip) and saw a goat standing on the porch of a house. Needless to say, I stopped the truck and backed up to make sure that I saw what I saw. On several trips later I saw the goat either on the porch or in a large Maple tree in the front yard. I still regret not getting a picture.Regards, -The Doc 2010-12-19 15:32:34 | Comments | Printable version

Letter: The Heron in a tree phenomenon Comment on Our Satuday visitor, a close up of an urban Great Blue Heron's visit, with photos. George Rice writes: Great picture of the Heron in the tree. Being a river boy and later living on a dry ridge with farm ponds I have seen many Herons, but I had never seen a heron in a tree. It must have been so cold that day that it was mentally unbalanced. -George RiceThanks, George Rice. It would be interesting to know of others' experience seeing herons in trees. May be more common than we've noticed before, simply because they're so hard to spot there. Stranger things have happened, though, if this particular heron is bent on evolving from a shore bird to a more eagle like creature. I saw a piece on the British television - so it must be true - about sheep roosting in trees. Click to Flying Sheep to see for yourself. 4 min. JIM: 100 years ago: Columbia Temperance Society Wherein "Jim" illustrates, with the words of Judge Herschel Clay Baker, the long tradition and the luxurious hypocrisy Adair Countians have long enjoyed and outsiders never understood: Being legally dry, but pragmatic about indulgence -CM By "Jim" ("...with the flavor of an old time julep under his nose, and a temperance pledge on his conscience...") The following was penned by Judge Herschel Clay Baker (in his best editorial voice) and appeared in the December 13, 1911 News. Curiously enough, it did not appear in the series of Judge Baker's collected Sketches of Adair County that appeared across some 40 issues of the News in 1918. Rev. Joey N. Welsh. Poets for December: Thomas Merton ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. This column previously appeared on December 3, 2006 The next earlier Another Angle: By The Rev. Joey N. WelshPoets and Poetry for December, Part II: Emily Dickinson By Rev. Joey N. Welsh E-mail: joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com Poets and Poetry for December, Part III: Thomas Merton Often when I write about people I choose dates near their birthdays for my columns; today's column notes a dath date. Thomas Merton was born on January 31, 1915 in Prades, France. His death anniverseary was ten days ago, the same day that marked the birth of Emily Dickinson. He died in Bangkok, Thailand on December 10, 1968, electrocuted as he touched a faulty electric fan after stepping out of his bath. These two dates are the bookends for the life of an individual, but between the dates came the bountiful spiritual journey of a man who was a Trappist monk, an acclaimed theologian, a contemplative, a best-selling author, a social activist, and a poet. Rickie Williams saves CM from big embarrassment Comments re article 41260 Christmas Greeting Cards free for individuals many othersRickie Williams writes: "Photos should be non-commercial, devoid of logos, signs, links, apparel, specialty, or photo background advertising." No APPAREL? You are going to post photos of people only wearing what God gave them? in the nude? nekked? Why Ed, I would be ashamed! s/Rickie Williams Ed note: Abject. Ruthful. Contrite. In need of absolution. is more like it. No nekkedness in ColumbiaMagazine.com is tolerated. Heck, we'd help librarians paint bras on National Geographic pictures with magic markers to keep such wickedness away from kids. No. No nekkedness here. There is no doubt in our military, mathematical mind that made a truly bad mistake in that article. We meant "no apparel with advertising on it' and the wording has been changed. We plead ignorance, having never had the benefit of the ultimate education at THE University in Fayetteville, that a privileged few born again Adair Countians possess. The article has been changed. Maps addition to events, stories in beta A note on the additon of maps to some CM Events and articles. On a number of articles, but not all, a symbol such as this one: (MAP), for a Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY, location have been added. One problem encountered is that the maps, in some cases, are not accurate. For instance: The markers for Trinity United Methodist Church and Betty's OK Country Kitchen appear on the map approximately .6-7 of a mile north of their actual location. Coincidentally, this distance is the same as the distance from the Public Square to the point the name of the road changes from Campbellsville "Street," to Campbellsville "Road." The same situation occurs, at times, for other locations when Google Maps don't work now as they will likely work in the very near future, or until the few idiosyncrasies in the local road names are changed, as they were just a few months ago when we discovered that having more than one road in Adair County with Loy, Grant, Corbin, Walker or other family name in it could cause confusion. 2010-12-19 01:14:04 | Comments | Printable version
