100 years ago: Thus spake Mr. Joseph Allen Turner Even 100 years ago, it was hard to keep the J.A. Turners straight. Readers of today may understand which one was from Big Elm, which one was from Russell County, and which one, writing under the nom de plume of 'Paul Rever,' living in Metcalfe Co., KY by "Jim" I'd intended to hold this one for later, but seeing as how I seem to have gotten tangled up in a canine fracas of a sort and me with neither a dog in the pit nor a dollar on the table, I thought it best to clear the remnants of my good name, posthaste. If there's anything left of it by the time I homeward slink a fortnight from now, I'll try to fish out Mr. (Joseph Allen) Turner's report on the source of Big Elm's name. Mr. Joesph Allen Turner Speaks Up Mr. Joseph Allen Turner of the Big Elm domain had a way with words, evidenced nowhere any better than in a slo-mo word spat with the Dirigo correspondent in the winter of 1909 over land values in the latter's corner of the world. Extrapolating estimates, Columbia would pass C-ville in 2126 A look at the 2000 figures and the 2009 estimates, already published, show that Campbellsville had the largest total estimated growth at 758 to Columbia's 612, but Columbia's estimated growth rate of 15.24% was more than double that of its larger neighbor, which grew at an estimated rate of 7.22% At those rates of growth, Columbia will over take Campbellsville in a blink of history's eye no later than 2166, when Columbia's population would be 29,214 to Campbellsville's 27,878. For those around in 2306, at the present rates of growth, Columbia would have 497,160 to 112,619. Our statistician did not cypher when Columbia would reach the Magic Million number, but it looks like it might be rather soon after 2306.-EW By Ed Waggener In five days, on December 21, 2010, the U.S. Census will be reporting census figures for the all important apportionment, national population, and state populations. Right now, there are estimates and the estimates show Greensburg, Russell Springs, and Burkesville with a slight drop in population. The largest increase in population would be in the Campbellsville, KY, with 758 and Columbia, KY, with an increase of 612. In terms of percentage increase, the largest would be Columbia, with 15.24% in the nine year period. Campbellsville's 7.22% estimated growth rate is slightly less than half that of Columbia. For those who can't wait, and would like to look at the latest estimates in 2009 that the U.S. Census bureau has published, here's a look at communities in the 7-county Columbia area: U.S. Census (2000 figures) and 2009 estimates

Crocus Creek Moon Meteorite story by Joseph ALLEN Turner Now we know which J.A. Turner wrote the piece "Jim" brought up Comments re article 41187: Crocus Mill Farm named in honor of Mill on famed creekRalph Turner Reece writes: The story about the Crocus Creek Meteorite was by Joseph Allen Turner, son of Joseph Turner and Susannah McGlasson Turner and grandson of Thomas Turner and Nancy Hannah Myers Turner. Joseph Allen Turner moved from Crocus Creek to a farm known as Big Elm Farm located on the Cabin Fork Creek Road off Highway 55 beyond Glens Fork. Joseph Allen wrote to the paper regularly and as far as I know always from Big Elm. He had a large scrapbook where he kept writings, but there was nothing to indicate he ever used the name "Paul Revere" Joseph Allen Turner was married to Martha Jane Strange. They were my great grandparents. Thanks for the clarification. According to Jim's research and story, there were several J.A. Turners of the era, and more than one corresponded with the paper. As he wrote, he wasn't sure which one wrote the Crocus Creek Moon Meteorite story, but wondered if it could have been "Paul Revere." "Paul Revere" was the penname for Joseph ALEXANDER Turner, who moved from the Crocus Creek area to Cave Ridge in Metcalfe Co., KY and was married to Almedia Frances Anderson on November 21, 1872. -EW 2010-12-16 16:29:48 | Comments | Printable version
