Carol Perkins: Signs

Carol wants to think of signs which will do for Edmonton, KY, what Wall Drug signs have done for Wall, SD. Edmonton had it's share of one of a kind signs, from Jack Shirley's to Ms. Lillie Hughes' restaurant sign
The next earlier Carol Perkins column, Throwing Dishes

By Carol Perkins

I find signs fascinating and have a habit of reading them to the left and to the right of the highway, especially when I am not driving. I prefer not to be driving and sign reading! One hinders the other.

When our children were young, the only place we vacationed was Florida.

Poetry by Robert Stone: What others say

What others say
- a sonnet for myself and for others who say I talk too much
If I should tell no other, why tell me
the secrets hidden in the past you claim?
Confession is relief but not bell free
and small reminders brighten ashen blame.

If I should only hear and not respond,
speak not of achings in your broken heart.
Display is cry for help of healing wand
and great despair diminishes restart.

If I should understand a need for hope,
let hesitation quickly flee away.
Construct a new and solid plan to cope
and simple steps will lead to better day.

Be still, my mouth, and let me listen well
and when you speak, be careful what you tell.

- Robert Stone, 12 December 2010

The trap is laid

Last Friday morning [Dec. 7th] the editor of this paper met with a great surprise on his arrival in town. As announced elsewhere in this issue, a daughter had been born to his wife on the evening before and therefore being in a happy mood, a few friends decided to play a practical joke which was carried out without a bobble.

Christmas on CM: Have a special, Christmas memory or story?

If you have a special Christmas memory or story, why not share it with CM readers. Some ideas:
  • Letters to Santa: Christmas to many is about the Birth of Christ. But it also means the twinkle in a child's eyes with anticipation of toys. Whether the letters are from individuals or from school groups, we'll do our best to post them

  • Christmas Memories: Every year, CM runs stories of Christmases past. Memories from when times were hard. Memories of a first bike. Memories of making do. Memories of food. Memories of reunions. Some favorites in our archives will be linked. Some will be replayed. We'd like to add some new ones.

  • Christmas Plays and Events: Remember to post them. Many readers like to plan as many church and school events as they can work into their schedules. If your church, school, or organization is having a special Christmas program, please send. And remember to include times, dates, street number and address, and names of performers and photos with names. We hope to hear from groups all over the Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Co., KY, areas.

  • Free Christmas Cards: Christmas Cards, photos especially decorated from families, will be posted free,, courtesy of special sponsors, as space allows and as they fit ColumbiaMagazine.com needs and formats. We've already received a few. We hope you'll send yours. Faces should be identified.

  • Christmas Cards for Pets Yes. Send these. As space and time is available, we'll post them, free courtesy of special sponsors. We'll post as space allows and as they fit CM needs and formats.

  • Christmas Wishes from Businesses, Organizations, Elected Officials and Professional People are available on CM, as paid advertising from $9. up.

  • Christmas Lights and Displays: Some Christmas Lights photos are already posted. If you spot a special display, and you'd like to try your hand at photography. More and more South Central Adair Countians seem to be enjoying. So everyone will know how to drive and plan the best routes for Christmas lights, please include Street Numbers and Addresses for the displays. It's the courteous thing to do.

  • Christmas Poetry. Yes. Please send. We'll post as it is possible. Christmas just seems a perfect season for verse.

  • Christmas Front Page timed announcements: Yes. They're available on an hourly, special hour each day, daily, and around the clock basis. It's a big deal. But there hasn't been any big fuss about it. It's just another of the ongoing changes made in an effort to make CM a more effective option for you.

  • Christmas Special Hours and Closings: Yes, we'll be posting those, too

  • Christmas Classifieds: Many categories of CM Classifieds are free. Some have very small fees. All have a big impact.

Poets And Poetry For December, Part Ii: Emily Dickinson
Last Friday marked the birth date of a woman known to her contemporaries as the "New England Mystic," the "Woman in White" and the "Belle of Amherst." We know her as poet. Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts -- five days after the birth of Christina Rossetti across the Atlantic Ocean in England. She came from a literate family prominent in educational and political circles, and she grew up having easy access to books. Dickinson spent a brief time at Mt. Holyoke Female Seminary (later Mt. Holyoke College), but she returned home after less than a year of study there, never to go back. During most of her life she was viewed by outsiders as a mysterious recluse, but her correspondence reveals that she cherished the relationships she chose to cultivate.

Hi Paul and Mary Ann:

Mom has been gone three years, a few days from now. I think as a family, we have handled her passing better than I would have thought. As you know, I have a few reminders of her around -- "our" picture on the wall across from my easy chair here at Tallgrass, her favorite old scarf draped over that picture, her Red Door trademark cologne on the kitchen cabinet, where I get a whiff when I need it.
