KY Color: How to spot Frost Flowers, review of what they are

This column is review of how Frost Flowers are formed, With hints on how, where to spot the ice formations. Click on headline for full Kentucky Color plus more photos
Next earlier Kentucky Color: A Special Place To Live, December 2, 2010

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

I understand that there are still many CM readers who missed the initial find of Frost Flowers in 2009 and in response to your inquiries; Frost Flowers are not real flowers nor are they frost.

Frost Flowers are actually ice structures that are formed on the stem, usually the base, of weeds. Tick weed and Iron weed are at least two varieties of weeds that produce them.

Need for use of street addresses important for institutions, too

Comments re article 40959 Making deliveries in Florida Simple with Streets and Numbers

George Kolbenschlag writes:

Ed, you are dead on with the issue of street addresses. I cannot understand why any business or public/private institution would not list and use street addresses for individual buildings. That's especially true for organizations occupying or using multiple buildings such as colleges/universities and government offices.

In today's world almost all commecial vehicles and many private autos carry a GPS system that can direct the driver to a very specific location or building.

A general "institutional" address makes it very difficult if your GPS drops you off on the wrong side of a complex of buildings or if one or more buildings are not co-located with the institutional address. A glaring example of that is colleges (including Lindsey Wilson) where the sports complexes are not co-located with the main campus.

"Everyone knows where it is" does not fly if the person looking is not from around here--a mom, dad or friend of the opposing team.

Please, give us street addresses and mark your buildings, not just building names. It's not that hard to do.
