Thanksgiving stories? Please share yours

Is there a unique Thanksgiving story or tradition in your family, church, organization , neighborhood or community?

Or maybe you have something special to be thankful for this year.

If so, would you share? Robert Stone suggested the stories be collected, possibly including those from past CM issues.

Today, fortuitiously, Joan C. McKinney, News and Publications coordinator for Campbellsville University, sent a story which gives an account of a Thanksgiving Tradition started by three northern Taylor Co. congregations which has grown over the years. It's posted at Thanksgiving Stories: 7 Taylor Co. churches join for meal

The stories we want may be long, short, serious, humorous, or about almost any subject about Thanksgiving with an Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor County connection. -EWThanks to Joan C. McKinney for a wonderful story which we've used to start what we hope will be a series and a tradition.

Remembering Roberta Logan Bowling, wife of Ed Bowling

Husband Ed Bowling was longtime Green River Lake area of Adair Co., KY, resident; his wife's funeral is Wednesday in Louisville; interment in Cumberland Co., KY Wednesday afternoon.
Pam Kermeen writes:
Edward Bowling was our neighbor for years and he sold his place and moved back to Louisville about 2-3 years ago, after being our neighbor in Columbia for about 7-8 years. Edward lost his wife, Roberta Logan Bowling Sunday afternoon, November 21, 2010. Ed spent a lot of time at the Columbia Dairy Queen, so many who drank coffee there will certainly remember him.

He was the only 'grandpa' that our son Daniel ever had. Daniel mowed his grass and dug holes every spring for Ed's tomato plants. Ed even attended Daniel's football games when able. Thank you for all you do to keep Columbia connected. Pam Kermeen
The obituary is at Mrs. Roberta Logan Bowling, Jefferson Co., KY

Boothless CIC puts crimp in Bernice Flowers scholarship fund

Democratic Women's Club has funded Bernice Flowers Scholarship fund for 20 years with money the club raises at its Christmas in Columbia Booth. This year, there won't be booths, but you can help keep the tradition going with donations to the DWC

By Victoria Pike

The Adair County Democrat Women's Club will be unable to have a booth at Christmas in Columbia this year. We have been told there will be no place for vendors booths this year.

This has been our fundraising event for our Bernice Flowers Scholarship for a graduating high school senior for nearly 20 years.

We want to thank those who have supported us in the past by purchasing our baked goods and crafts. This year has caught us by surprise.

Those wishing to make donations to the scholarship fund may do so by sending it to Victoria Pike, 3011 Burkesville RD, Columbia KY 42728 or giving it to one of our officers. Cynthia Rowe, Pam Shearer, or Evelyn Phelps.

Next year we will have to make a hard decision on how to fund it. If anyone has any ideas, please contact me at (270) 384-3348. One idea would be to add a donation when you pay your regular dues in the spring.

Again, thank you to all our wonderful ladies who work so hard supporting our party and the events we have.

Sincerely,
s/Victoria Pike, President
Democratic Womens Club

Inquiry: Vendor booths for Christmas in Columbia

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I looked over the ads for Christmas in Columbia but did not see any booth information. Are there going to be vendor booth spaces this year?
Thanks for your inquiry. It appears vendor booth spaces are not part of the plan this year. While this will be a disappointment to many, it does appear that other aspects of Christmas in Columbia will be as big or bigger than ever.

Fond memories of Node and Seven Springs area, Metcalfe Co., KY

Pilot Knob in North Metcalfe is a magical place, less than 30 miles from Columbia, KY, but not so well known here. It's well worth the side trip from Sulphur Well, KY, when one attends to Country Ham cravings at that Destination City. Pilot Knob, the Thompson monument, The Cut, and the Latter Day Saints church are just a few of unique sites so close at hand on a day trip to Sulphur Well. Gary Lane, Center Grade School, Greensburg High School, Lindsey Wilson College, and Berea and Purdue University graduate and native of the territory, has fond memories of one neighborhood in the area, and of the wonderful proprietor who knew how to give a kid his nickel's worth.
About: Ione Stapp was a wonderful woman

By Dr. Gary Lane

Ione Stapp ran the store at Node for many years while I was growing up in that area.

She was a wonderful person, always had a smile and a pleasant something to say.

Thanks, Mrs. Perkins for the letter sent after reading the article first published in the Campbellsville University Campbellsvillian written by Linda Waggener, with additional photos from ColumbiaMagazine.com To read it, click to Lewis Haynes recognized by alma mater, Campbellsville U. (While we'd like to take credit for it, the "paper" Mrs. Perkins refers is very apt to be the influential "It's Just for a Smile News," which Ralph Roy Waggener publishes.
