Whittlers: Watch for summons to converge on Square On soon to be announced date and time, Hill & Jones expect a huge convergence of whittlers on the Columbia Square, with timber in hand!!! By Ken Hill For too long now, the topic of whittling has gone silent! Since previous postings I have spent many unproductive hours reducing 50 year-old fence posts to a pile of sweet smelling shavings, (It is amazing how the odor of 1/2 century old Cedar rejuvenates itself with the application of American steel) and it is the most therapeutic discovery I have made in my 30+ years of living. OK +++++!. Barry Jones and I have researched the matter thoroughly and have decided that there is a niche demographic for mindless whittlers like us. And based on our research we have thoroughly dismissed the notion that years of public service have rendered us incapable of much else. Remembering Eleanor Jean Laytart: From her grandson Comments re photo 37759 Remembering Eleanor Jean Laytart Taylor Co KY Dakota Laytart writes: Hey anyone who reads this: that lady in the pic is the greatest woman I have ever met other than my mother, and I am her grandson. Yeah, I am and I really can't help but type this in sadness as I feel sorrow, but I wish that she had a longer life. Yeah. Yeah she is in a better place now and she isn't suffering anymore. Well yeah, but i wish I had a chance to say, "Goodbye." The last time I saw her was when she was up and doing good, so, yeah, the only regret I have is she really did not get to see her great grandkids. The funeral home did a wonderful job and I thank them. Thanks to all the people who attended. - Her grandson, Dakota Christian Lane Laytart. 2010-11-11 15:15:12 | Comments | Printable version

Sweethearts for over 65 years: Arnold and McEva He carried her photo through World War II, separated from it only while being evacuated after being wounded in the Battle of Brest France. He didn't see it again until after returning to Adair County and marrying the girl of his dreams, and later a package arrived from the Army with the personal belongings taken from him the day he was wounded. The rest of the family, forgot the treasure existed until just before his death, when, by chance, the testament to a 67 year romance, resurfaced again. Click on headline for story plus photo(s) by Nancy Mayse Mann There's a picture I treasure. It accompanies this article. Mom gave the picture to Dad when he was getting ready to go to the Army in 1940 or, maybe, when he left in 1944 to fight. It was a black and white picture, but an Army buddy volunteered to colorize it for Dad. Dad carried the picture in his wallet the entire time he was in service . . . until he was wounded in the "Battle of Brest, France."
