Commentary: Burkesville, KY gives right of way to KY 61 Burkesville pattern similar to Elizabethtown's. Problem on Square in Columbia is drivers, writer says. They need to be more alert Comments re article: Thank You to Charles Marshburn, Request for enlightenment By Joyce Coomer Highway 61 has the right-of-way through Burkesville - not oncoming traffic. If you'll notice, the streets to the west and east of Highway 61 have to give traffic on Highway 61 the right-of-way, so if you're coming from Columbia, and driving straight through Burkesville, you don't have to stop on the square. Elizabethtown is set up this way also, with Highway 61 having the right-of-way and the other two roads having to yield to Highway 61. The Crescent Moon: Transitions are most beautiful of times We should learn to appreciate the beauty of the times of transition in our lives as we do in nature. -Billy Joe Fudge Comments on viewing: Scenic Adair Co KY Crescent moon November 7 2010 By Billy Joe Fudge This is a most amazing photo. I love the "Thumbnail" moon but the colors and stark contrast titillates my memories and notions of autumn and it being a period of transition. In nature we often see that periods of transition are the most beautiful of times. Dawn and dusk, and autumn and spring are perfect examples of the transitional beauty in nature. We should learn to appreciate the beauty of the times of transition in our lives as we do in nature. If we could limit our lamentations and sing songs to celebrate the beauty of the times of change and transition in our lives rather than wrapping ourselves in dirges we would, I am sure, be better persons and a better people for it. -Billy Joe Fudge 2010-11-09 11:04:01 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local Arts Scene
100 years ago : A Wedding of Note The marriage of Miss Mary Ritchey and Mr. John Lee Walker was the major social event of the year in 1910 By "Jim" Two articles dominated the front page of the Wednesday, November 9, 1910 edition of the News. The first, headlined "Interest Great," proved to be of only passing interest, as it was the tale of yet another vapor-rail, this one by-golly dead certain to "strike Columbia," as "the proposed [rail]road would run from Corbin to Somerset, thence to Columbia and via Campbellsville and Buffalo into Hodgenville." Well. We all know how well that worked out. The subject matter of the second article proved much more lasting and certainly had much greater impact on Columbia than did the railroad that wasn't. So, without fanfare or ado, today's feature presentation: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2010-11-09 10:13:44 | Comments | Printable version
