A profile in courage: The single Adair Countian who voted for Lincoln in 1860 Finally, the name of the man who cast the one vote for Abraham Lincoln in the election of 1860 is remembered. It took so much more courage then. Votes were shouted out in public at the polls. Historians have long believed the man to be native son William Stewart (1830-1904). But it wasn't William Stewart. "Jim" has the indisputable Adair News account of the name of the courageous voter, revealed below, who cast the single, solitary vote for the greatest Kentuckian of all times. The back story - I came across the two-line reference to "Uncle Gum" in the News several months ago and tucked it away with the intent of sending it pretty much as a stand-alone throwaway on election day. However, when I dug it out of my files a day or three ago, it, like a Ouija board planchette run amuck, took a life of its own, ensorcelled my hands, and drove them to type what appears below. "Jim" By "Jim" A profile in courage: Uncle Gum & the election of 1860 The Presidential campaign of 1860 was a nasty, brutal affair. The country teetered on the brink of war, emotions of the electorate ran high, and the four -- yes, four -- candidates went for broke, neither asking for nor giving quarter in their quest for the White House. The candidates were Stephen A. Douglas, of the Northern Democratic party; John Bell, Constitutional Union party; Kentuckian John C. Breckinridge, Southern Democratic party; and Abraham Lincoln of the Republican party. The latter-named entity was the upstart political party of the North, formed in the mid 1850s after the old Whig party collapsed under the weight of the rising tensions and increasing regional divisions. Stay tuned to CM: Election mystery solved NLT 8:14amCT today We rarely do this. And hate it when Tv stations drone on and on and on and on about news after the break (but first this important message). It may be the biggest reason why more people are obtaining news from the internet or at the country store every day "Jim" entitles it, "An Adair County Profile in Courage."But this story, to be revealed, ranks right up there, for me, with the day I discovered, with the help of Mr. Richard Phelps, the grave of Adair County hero Lingan Selby. It is the answer to an election question which has troubled great political thinkers of the ages, even for Adair County Clerk Bob White, as I remember. No later than 8:14am today, Monday, election eve, 2010, we aim to post this amazing discovery, about an Adair County election held over 100 years ago. Just to firmly equivocate on the subject of prior restraint, it wasn't my idea to hold back this important revelation. "Jim" embargoed the news, "until Monday or Tuesday," when he sent it to me. And we don't want to tick him off. He knows too much, and despite his upbringing in the Sacred Triangle of Sano/Ono/Esto of Russell Co., and his gentle Quaker ways, it's untelling what retribution might befall one who provokes him. It may be "Jim's" magnum opus. Though he produces a magnum opus almost every week, sometimes twice a week. I'll say no more for now. More after the break -Ed Waggener 2010-11-01 04:45:48 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
