Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Statue of Liberty

This essay appeared in the Munfordville, KY, Hart County Herald, on 23 October 2005 reprinted with author permission
ANOTHER ANGLE, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor"
An important addition to an important national symbol

The next previous essay, Autumn

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

This week marks the anniversary of the public dedication of the Statue of Liberty, back on October 28, 1886. Designed by sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the outer skin of the large hollow statue is held erect by a complicated metal skeleton engineered by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. (The tower in Paris bearing Eiffel's name was to open just a few years later.)

Remembering Sarah: She will live on in Daughter Caroline

About: Sad word of the passing of Sarah Irvin-Gardner

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I didn't know Sarah well, but as a mother of five, I know where she got the strength to fight for her child. She brought a beautiful gift into this world that nobody will ever forget. God has an amazing plan for Sarah and she will live on in Daughter Caroline. My prayers are with her family today. Sarah is an amazing mother and an amazing example of someone putting everything they have for another life. God Bless.

The Portillos suggestion is now officially a movement

The orchestra - or is it the Baptist Church chimes? - can already be heard playing a coupla bars from Alice's Restaurant. Greg Dawkins mere suggestion to bring one to Holladay Place in Columbia has swelled into a great movement! It will not be surprising to hear Dawkins suggested for the Presidency of the United States of America
About: Greg Dawkins sees movement on his effort to get a Portillo's

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

My gosh! To have a Portillo's in Columbia would be great. Their food is just plain old delicious. And not just their hot dogs. Everything is good. I used to go there when I lived in Summit, IL.

You go, Mr. Greg Dawkins.

Carol Perkins: The Pumpkin patch

Halloween's ritual has evolved over the years but Carol Sullivan Perkins keeps the best part of it alive for her grandchildren with a trip to the king of Metcalfe County pumpkin growers, Brandon Bell.
The next earlier Carol Sullivan Perkins column: Who would have believed it?

By Carol Perkins

This is the time of year when pumpkins light up my life. I love looking at them, piled high on truck beds, headed for market. I like how they hide under green vines and can be seen only when they begin to turn orange. The best part of fall, other than the weather, is the sight of a pumpkin patch.

Friday Night at the Strand

I must make an honest confession. I like westerns. There! I've said it. I like western novels. I loved western movies when they played at the Strand Theater every Friday and Saturday back in the 1940's.

Our grandmother took us to the Strand every Friday night. Grandfather would never go. Westerns were too childish for him. He would not have been surprised to learn that the good guys always wore white hats - the bad ones black.

It does NOT come from butter-nuts! You city folks will probably say - "Oh, you can get it at Wal-Mart's or Braums and a lot of places."

This story is what I remember about Mom making butter in the olden days of the early 1930's.

Cycling Adair Co., KY: More than fun

Nothing rebuilds spirits like a perfect ride in the Adair County countryside. Gary Rose discovered this when he made eye contact with a whitetail buck, who seemed to be saying, 'Life is good.':

Diane and I took a late morning ride to Holmes Bend today on the tandem. Other then the 13 -15 mph headwind on the way home, it was a great ride. We were able to experience the autumn day up close and personal. The leaves falling from the trees, the squirrels running through the leaves along side the road. The Hawk aborting its landing as we passed by the fence post on which it was attempting to land.

Dream Depot cast gave gift of laughter to crowd of 60-75

You just can't feel bad when you are around the Dream Depot cast; they continue to inspire and give gifts of laughter and music to crowds of local fans as they did once again Saturday evening at the VFW Hall, 411 Fairground ST, in Columbia, KY. If you can resist laughing over at least one the lines or applauding spontaneously at the extraordinary voices, then one of them will probably wind up praying with you until you see the light...but that's another play.

By Linda Waggener
CM resident theater critic and devoted Depot fan

The Dream Depot crew met at Sonny's Country Cafe Saturday night, bringing together their own script and talent in a play by that title. A crowd of 60-75 enjoyed the play written and played by members of the community.

A little food was sold at the cafe... (well, actually very little, as even proprietor Sonny, himself, couldn't really recommend their cooking) and so most customers just wound up purchasing bottled water. He was telling one new customer to just go on to Moore's Pool Room or out to Betty's OK Country Cooking if they really wanted some good food, that is until one of the other proprietor twins, Myrtie or Girtie, slapped him upside his "greasy cap" and reminded him that food was served at their own place of business.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Change, a sonnet

Change
- a sonnet for Christopher Wendell Comperry

Each season is its own display of worth
and while fixed templates guide unfolding cores,
details will add variety on earth
for nature an exact repeat ignores.

Each situation is a shared unshared
experience where none will same recall
for even those who strive to be prepared
can never know all underlying brawl.

Each person is no single other force
for first impressions always grow or fade
and later interactions run their course
with like and unlike close unending played.

To own the present one must see the past
and welcome future chance where change is vast.

100 years ago: The great Russell Heights land sale

An amazing story of Russell Heights history. Columbia proudly counts it as among its most beautiful, vibrant, neighborhoods today. Investments in new homes, government projects, and continuous activism have finally brought the area to the standing its developers dreamed of, with one major, notable exception: The new Russell Heights has none of the ugly racism the ancient Adair County News, the old Democratic Party, or the developers espoused. Perhaps no place in Columbia, save Lindsey Wilson College, is pluralism lived so well today.

I, We
by Billy Joe Fudge
Do I think Im better?
No, I am the same as all.
Do we think we will conquer?
Well, we will soon see.

Do my muscles ache?
Yes, but I will never quit.
Do we think we will prevail?
Yes, for we will never quit.

Do I shirk and whine?
No, I must work.
Do we duck and dodge?
No, we must work.

Do I push ever forward?
Yes, I march on.
Do we face the enemy?
Yes, we march on.
