Garden Club needs jars for its apple butter

By M.E. Lewis
News from the Adair Co. Garden Club

The Adair County Garden Club met this morning to critique our Downtown Days event to see how we can improve for next year.

We want to make the apple butter again next year but to keep our cost down we were wondering if the community could help us by donating pint and half pint jars.

We know there are a lot of old home places around these parts and there are probably some jars that have not been used in years in basements or cellars or attics or closets or cabinets.

You can call Maury Lewis at (270) 384-8890 or Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979. Thanks. Maury Lewis

Spanning the centuries Ms. Alta, Ms. Esther Gilmer

Centenarian and future centenarian's paths may have crossed when Mrs. Barbee was a little girl, living near the the Public Square

By Wayfaring Stranger

It occurs to this wayfaring stranger that almost certainly, Columbia centenarian Alta Barbee Garnett in her youth knew another Adair Countian who crossed the century mark, Esther Gilmer Dohoney.

Both lived near the Square, and Mrs. Dohoney didn't pass away until mid-September 1920, a few days before Miss Barbee's 12th birthday. At the time of her death, Mrs. Dohoney was 102 years old, having been born in Adair County in May, 1818.

The point is this: it's quite possible that Mrs. Garnett, still living in 2010, heard Mrs. Dohoney speak first-hand of events witnessed and experienced in the 1820s, nearly two centuries removed from today. -The Wayfaring Stranger
