The Throng of Thousands, from the Board Room, Bank of Columbia

2010-10-12 - Photo by Donna Stotts. Downtown Columbia, KY
The THRONG of THOUSANDS who gathered to see the Sammy Kershaw concert, Saturday, October 9, 2010, is captured, though not completely, in this photo taken in the hour from 6-7pm. The crowd was still gathering on the Square. Donna Stotts, loan officer at the Bank of Columbia is the photographer. The picture was taken from the bank's board room on the second floor at 144 Public SQ, Columbia, KY. Employees and families watched the concert from the window of Rhonda Cox's office and the board room, except for a few intrepid ones who actually went to the bank's roof top for an even better vantage point. The Bank of Columbia, CEO Robert Flowers, was a Diamond Sponsor of the Event. Thanks to Gina Campbell for submitting the photo

Paul A. Fryman: Pastor Paul's Ponderings

Pastor Paul's Ponderings, by Pastor Paul A. Fryman, is sent every Monday to members of the congregation of State Street United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, KY. One of those members, Annette Richards, forwarded it to ColumbiaMagazine.com. It's very compelling, maybe even more so for Annette and me because it is so evocative of our Mother's outlook. Pastor Fryman is a former Columbia District of the United Methodist Church District Superintendent, who was a resident of this city for three years. With his permission, the story below is shared with readers of ColumbiaMagazine.com. -EW
"For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7, KJV

By Pastor Paul A. Fryman
State Street United Methodist Church
1101 State ST, Bowling Green, KY

She was 92 years young. I put it that way deliberately. You will understand why I put it that way in a moment. She was 92 years young. One summer day, she rose from her bed, fully dressed herself, put on her makeup and brewed one final cup of coffee in her home. It was moving day. She was leaving that day for a new home - a nursing facility. Her husband of 70 years had passed away and she realized the time had come to make that move.

Impressed with Coach Burton, ACHS Boys Golf Team

About: ACHS Boys Golf history-making season comes to end

By Doug McCammish

I have been excited and impressed all season long with the way these young men performed and the way Coach Burton managed them.

Not being a golfer myself, I've been amazed at their consistent scores.

Congratulations to them for making it to state and thanks for representing Adair County!

I'm ready to root for them next year.

Lets not forget that the girls team did really well with a young crew, also. I'm planning to watch Columbia Magazine for their accomplishments next year also. -Doug McCammish

Top 10 Throngs in Adair Co., KY: Tim McGraw Concert 1994

  • Tim McGraw Concert 1994
About: Many at Moores say Saturday crowd biggest ever
See list as updated at Nominees, Top 10 Throngs Ever Gathered in Adair Co. KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Now, I've only lived in Adair County for 26 years and I must admit that I didn't have the honor of attending the "court house wedding," but the biggest gathering I can recall was the Tim McGraw concert at the county fair way back in the 1900's (1994 if I'm not mistaken).

You know, it's enough to make you want to stick your chest out when you think that our little town has welcomed such stars as Tim McGraw, Jerry Clower, Diamond Rio, Sammy Kershaw, and of course local legends "Machismo"! Can't wait to see who comes to town next.

Good News from Jackie Wheeler: The wildcat baby made it.

Jacqueline Wheeler sent an update on story with the photo in the Monday, October 11, 2010, issue of the Daily News at ColumbiaMagazine.com.She wrote:
"Just thought you'd like to see this picture I took this morning, October 11, 2010, on the Ozark Mountain High Road near Branson, Missouri," writes Jackie Wheeler, who now lives in Branson West, MO, but is and always will be an Adair County, Kentuckian. "It's a Momma wildcat. She and her baby were crossing the road and her baby didn't make it. She was trying to get her baby off the road. She wouldn't leave her, so I went back and took a picture and moved her baby off the road closer to its mother; hopefully she made it."
This morning, she clarified the story, along with the Good News answer to the question many readers slept with overnight, Did the baby make it?:
Yes. Actually my "Better Half" picked the baby up and moved it to the edge of the road while I watched Momma. As we left, we saw her grab her baby and take it off the road.
Our hope is that there will be a followup to the wonderful wildlife story. Maybe Jackie and her better half will see the Momma wildcat and her baby again. Maybe they will recognize each other. Maybe there was a bond established with the human heroism which will be repaid with a gentle show of gratitude from this fierce predator. -EW

The throng which gathered to observe the execution of the brothers Fitchpatrick (Fitzpatrick) in Columbia in the spring of 1884 was, according to a contemporary newspaper account, "estimated by good judges, at 7,000." The same account also stated "It was a very orderly crowd" and that "There were over one thousand women present at the hanging."

Q.: Stone portals at Columbia Cemetery part of original plan?

About: History Columbia City cemetery entrance completion 1919To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

What a great find from Jim regarding the historic Columbia Cemetery entrance!

It's too bad the "devise" from Ms. Kizzie Russell's will was so little appreciated in years to come. The entry was torn away when the road was widened, and replaced by a large cement wall.
