The estimate on the crowd is bigger Gale King at Daniel's Mexican Grill thinks there were 5-6,000 here for event By Linda Waggener I'm still wondering just how big the crowd was at the Saturday night Sammy Kershaw concert. Saturday afternoon I was hearing, in Cafe Columbia, that 3,000 were expected. This evening Gale King at Daniel's Mexican Grill said she was sure there had to have been as many as 5-6,000. Mrs. King said that the restaurant served more people on Saturday than ever before, and that all the vendors she talked to were busy too. The walk by the restaurant, was filled, too. It will be interesting to know how other local businesses fared during Downtown Days. For sure, everybody seemed to have been having a great time. I know it made me terribly proud of our town to see everyone enjoying it so much. Thanks, Renaissance Columbia. -Linda 2010-10-10 20:37:55 | Comments | Printable version

Adair Countian wants route to Rockhouse bottom 'Would love to share the wonders of KY that my God has created with my kids,' writer thoughtfully notes. About: Person with ponytail in Rockhouse Doodlebug photo To ColumbiaMagazine.com: The shading of the rock in the upper right corner does look like the outline of a person. Pretty cool picture. I have been trying to take my daughter and son to Rockhouse bottom for a while now so that they can see how beautiful it is, but I have not been able to find it. I have only been there once, and it was so amazingly beautiful. Would love to share the wonders of KY that my God has created with my kids. If someone could post great directions on how to get there I would greatly appreciate it. I'm just not having any luck on my own. s/Lea Ann Parnell The Rock House is approximately 20 miles from Columbia, KY. One way to get to the Rock House, from Columbia, KY: take KY 55 through Glensfork. About two miles south of Glens Fork, turn right on Crocus Road, KY 1313. You'll pass one of Adair County's most beautiful, ever, homes on the right in Crocus, KY. The next main intersection is Bryan, KY. Bear right on KY 1058. In the ghost town community of Creelsboro, turn right on KY 379 travel about two miles watching for the formation on the left. We've been checking for a street number and street, but haven't found that yet. That would make finding the formation much easier. Two other ideas we'd like to pass along:

History: Columbia City cemetery entrance completion, 1919 When Jim ran across the accompanying old photograph of Earl Conover at the Columbia Cemetery entrance, did some research, and found some interesting background of the work Click on headline for story plus photo(s) by "Jim" From the Adair County News, 1919: Entrance CompletedThe plaque in the photo reads as follows: This entrance / erected in / 1919 / by devise of / Kizzie W. Russell Kizziah, better known as Kizzie, (1867 -1917) was a daughter William Lee Walker. She was the widow of N.G. Murrell; the second wife of Columbia businessman J.O Russell; and a much-respected partner of some three decades in the firm of Russell & Murrell, known as Russell & Co. after her marriage to Mr. Russell in 1905. The timing of the article, Wednesday, May 28, 1919, strongly suggests that the cemetery entrance was completed (or virtually so) in time for Memorial Day, Monday, May 26th. -"JIM" 2010-10-10 10:24:56 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
