The estimate on the crowd is bigger

Gale King at Daniel's Mexican Grill thinks there were 5-6,000 here for event

By Linda Waggener

I'm still wondering just how big the crowd was at the Saturday night Sammy Kershaw concert.

Saturday afternoon I was hearing, in Cafe Columbia, that 3,000 were expected. This evening Gale King at Daniel's Mexican Grill said she was sure there had to have been as many as 5-6,000.

Mrs. King said that the restaurant served more people on Saturday than ever before, and that all the vendors she talked to were busy too. The walk by the restaurant, was filled, too.

It will be interesting to know how other local businesses fared during Downtown Days.

For sure, everybody seemed to have been having a great time. I know it made me terribly proud of our town to see everyone enjoying it so much. Thanks, Renaissance Columbia. -Linda

I have to agree with Mr.Fudge. This is the largest crowd I've ever seen on the square. I would also like to say thanks to the organizers.

These are the types of positive social activities that make our little town feel like home.

Adair Countian wants route to Rockhouse bottom

'Would love to share the wonders of KY that my God has created with my kids,' writer thoughtfully notes.
About: Person with ponytail in Rockhouse Doodlebug photo

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The shading of the rock in the upper right corner does look like the outline of a person. Pretty cool picture. I have been trying to take my daughter and son to Rockhouse bottom for a while now so that they can see how beautiful it is, but I have not been able to find it.

I have only been there once, and it was so amazingly beautiful. Would love to share the wonders of KY that my God has created with my kids. If someone could post great directions on how to get there I would greatly appreciate it. I'm just not having any luck on my own.

s/Lea Ann Parnell

The Rock House is approximately 20 miles from Columbia, KY.
One way to get to the Rock House, from Columbia, KY: take KY 55 through Glensfork. About two miles south of Glens Fork, turn right on Crocus Road, KY 1313. You'll pass one of Adair County's most beautiful, ever, homes on the right in Crocus, KY. The next main intersection is Bryan, KY. Bear right on KY 1058. In the ghost town community of Creelsboro, turn right on KY 379 travel about two miles watching for the formation on the left.

We've been checking for a street number and street, but haven't found that yet. That would make finding the formation much easier.

Two other ideas we'd like to pass along:
  1. Stop by the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, 201 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY. They get many requests for directions to Creelsboro almost daily, Sue Stivers said, and they can show several options for a trip there.
  2. Go to the Hardscratch General Store and Deli at 7694 Highway 55 RD South Columbia, Kentucky 42728. (270) 384-4671. Almost anybody there can give you directions. It's the last store open if one takes the scenic route through Crocus. The Grab All Store is no longer in business.
Finally: Wish some entrepreneur would start a tour service from Columbia to Creelsboro. Maybe a retired couple could swing a 15 passenger bus, with a sound system, learn all the sights along the way, and have a little side income, as well. -CM

Bobby D. Morrison says enlargement helps see Rockhouse figure

About: Person with ponytail in Rockhouse Doodlebug photo. Photo by Shellie Elmore

Ed:

I can see the image. It is about 1/3 down the photo on the right and over about one (1) inch from the right. It helps to see if you enlarge to 150 to 200%.

It is not a real person but caused by the background.

Carol Perkins: Who would have believed it?

Ten thousand people for one concert in a town of 1450 people. It really happened, when the Kentucky Headhunters returned for the Sesquicentennial concert.
The next earlier Carol Sullivan Perkins column: Article to make Oprah feel bad

By Carol Perkins

When was the last time you have heard of nearly 10,000 people gathering for a free concert in a town whose total population is just slightly over 1450 people? It happened in Edmonton on Friday night, September 4, 2010, when the Kentucky Headhunters and Black Stone Cheery came home to be part of the historical Sesquicentennial Celebration. There were so many people that a few firefighters helped the videographer onto the rooftop of one of the local businesses so she could capture the crowd.

A Kindred Spirit: Thoughts on The Color Blue

My mother's favorite color was blue.

I live in Kentucky, which is the Bluegrass state. (I have to tell you though that the grass in my yard isn't blue. In fact, it isn't even green right now. It's mostly brown because it's so dry here.)

At the risk of being told that I am "sick" I am going to share with you my secret fetish. You are going to be surprised, I "gar-an-tee," to steal an expression from the Cajun Cook.

It came to mind last week here at Tallgrass Estates. I was partaking of the afternoon snack bar in the dining room. One of the things that caught my eye was a large tray of assorted melon tidbits. I had difficulty moving on for grazing in this "melon patch."

Living at a lovely place like Tallgrass Estates in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, you spend a disproportionate part of your life at the table, either eating sumptuously or waiting to be served. As you might guess, you frequently run out of intelligent things to talk about and the conversation digresses to something like this:

Cycling: GABRAKY coming through Columbia, KY Sunday

Columbia, KY, October 9, 2010 It was a great day for a bike ride and while I was on my way home from Downtown Days I was thinking that this is the weekend of GABRAKY, so I snapped a couple pictures of the "G" with an arrow on Bull Run Lane at KY 206. The symbols will guide the riders through Adair County.

Sunday October 10th the Governor's Autumn Bike Ride Across Kentucky (GABRAKY) will be passing through Adair County and Columbia. The GABRAKY is a 235-mile bike ride that starts at the Ohio River in Carrollton, KY and ends at the boat ramp in Dale Hollow State Park.

History: Columbia City cemetery entrance completion, 1919

When Jim ran across the accompanying old photograph of Earl Conover at the Columbia Cemetery entrance, did some research, and found some interesting background of the work
Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

by "Jim"

From the Adair County News, 1919:
Entrance Completed

C.M. Mikel, the stone mason, of Campbellsville, has completed the entrance to the cemetery, under the supervision of Mr. J.O. Russell, who fulfilled a request made by his deceased wife, she having made a devise in her will for this work. it is a very handsome and costly job, but few cemeteries in Kentucky having a more attractive and durable entrance.

The people of Columbia, who have loved ones in this cemetery, are not unmindful of this expenditure of money, and are praising Mr. Russell for his generous act. It is a memento to his sainted wife and will be to him long after he has been laid in the silent city of the dead.
The plaque in the photo reads as follows:

This entrance / erected in / 1919 / by devise of / Kizzie W. Russell

Kizziah, better known as Kizzie, (1867 -1917) was a daughter William Lee Walker. She was the widow of N.G. Murrell; the second wife of Columbia businessman J.O Russell; and a much-respected partner of some three decades in the firm of Russell & Murrell, known as Russell & Co. after her marriage to Mr. Russell in 1905.

The timing of the article, Wednesday, May 28, 1919, strongly suggests that the cemetery entrance was completed (or virtually so) in time for Memorial Day, Monday, May 26th. -"JIM"

Poetry by Robert Stone, Cocoons of comfort

Cocoons of comfort
- a sonnet reflecting on delving into doodlebug holes
Wherever we have been a while we leave
a shell that shows the limits of our stay
and those who know us well and see us weave
cocoons of comfort only see us gay.

By chance some later time we will have left
our former housing seeking greater growth,
and those who knew us then are now bereft
of understanding past and future both.

By misadventure promise dies or fades
and shrinking spirit fears expanding space
and those who cannot know us see our shades
of crumbling grey, our non-eternal trace.

Come poets, speak your incantations loud,
but not in hope but play address old shroud.

- Robert Stone, 10 October 2010
