100 years ago: news from around (and near) the Square In those days, Lindsey Wilson was a good customer for good fire wood. An interesting note about Alta Barbee sharing a birthday with a first cousin and an aunt. The big health worry of the day was diphtheria. The next earlier "News from 100 years Ago::100 years ago: the life and times of Dr. C.D. Moore By "Jim" The ebb and flow of everyday life near the Square seemed especially active in early autumn a century ago, as recorded on the front page of the October 5th, 1910 News. The Presbyterian Church's new organ had been christened the previous week at the Wednesday evening service. The News reported that "Miss Alice Walker presided at the organ, an instrument that has a most melodious tone, every note drawn artistically and beautifully." Captain W.W. Bradshaw was in the audience, and that worthy gentleman, never at a loss for words, "offered prayer, and made a short and interesting talk." Sano, or sartor resartus Editor Waggener: Having carefully perused the "recent" news from Sano; your addendum thereto asking -- nay, piteously pleading -- for the metes and bounds of that fair village; and Sir Erwin Lepiarczyk's learned postulate concerning same, I will offer the following: I would posit that Sano, like Ono and Esto (and, according to certain rumor-mongers, Montpelier), is a more a state of mind than a purely physical reality constrained by the laws of this earthly plane; that its location lies in the heart and gaze and wishes of the beholder, with borders as real but no more fixed than the merrily dancing will o' wisp; and that, as is the wont such things ethereal, it encompasses a considerably larger area from within than from without. In my younger days, I once spent three days traversing the breadth of Sano and upon passing what appeared to be the western edge of that fair town, found myself a mile on the setting sun side of Chicken Bristle. /s/ A Wayfaring Stranger See also Sano Straddling Theory of E.H.
