Downtown Denizens:
People and Pigeons: Walter Pidgeon Pigeon

2010-09-20 - Photo by Ed Waggener. 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY
The Downtown Scene is full of colorful people. Other denizens sharing downtown have unique personalities, including this fellow, a magnificent bird, whose dapper outfit reminds us of the late radio actor Walter Pidgeon, and that's what we call him when he's about, Walter Pidgeon Pigeon. Unless he's a she, in which guess, the name is Wanda Pidgeon Pigeon. This pigeon appears to be somewhat larger than most of the others.. A bit bossier. And in case any aspiring connoisseurs start referring to him as a "squab," and consider him as meal, he would not be the best. He's a watching pigeon, not an eating one. He'd have to be stewed for a long time to be tender. What one wants, for squab, is young, farm raised pigeons.

Letter: Suggests Lynn's Paradise Cafe

About: Epicurean Kentuckian Chicago cuisine gone a little Californian

Tami Wilson writes:
Hey there Pen,

I found Wild Eggs about a year ago, and really liked it. I'm sure you must, but just in case you don't know about Lynn's Paradise Cafe on Bardstown Rd. It's a retro-look joint with great *real* food "(real maple syrup- not "pancake syrup", etc.). It's a cool, especially kid-friendly, and very popular-but the wait for a seat isn't that bad since there's a cool little "fun-stuff" shop attached.

Been there? Great pancakes. Great omelets (my fave is the Greek (or Greekish) one.

Curiously,
Tami

Tami, Thanks for writing. I agree wholeheartedly that Lynn's offers one of the best breakfasts in the Louisville area. The play areas, the lamps, the corn mural, and the ongoing parking disputes with the hardware store next door all add to the "Lynn's Experience," but first and foremost the food has always been delicious and worth the wait.

Letter outlines A-Team Coaches request for Parity

'All coaches are trained at personal expense to remain eligible to coach. All coaches volunteer their time so that students can compete at district, region, and state competitions....The academic coaches of Adair County are asking that our coaching positions be recognized as comparable to any other coaching position, such as basketball, football, cheerleading, golf, etc. All extra curricular coaches are essential to reach the diverse needs of students and we feel none should be excluded from the coaching schedule. -TERESA ABSHER, BETTY KNIFLEY, MARY ANN McQUAIDE, JEANNA PIKE, BRETT RELIFORD, and SHERRY STOTTS

Dear Superintendent Treece and Board Members:

For well over five consecutive years, Adair County's academic teams have experienced tremendous success.

Parent asks Board for parity: Sports, A-team coaches

'No other school-sponsored teams are as directly representative of what students' job descriptions entail. The A-Teams are a direct reflection of the quality of education our students receive in the classroom and of the quality of coaching they receive from these gifted individuals. . . . It is clear that this is a team in every sense of the word, as worthy of that status as any team that involves bouncing or throwing a ball.' -JACKIE MONTGOMERY

Letter and text of presentation prepared for delivery

I would like to express my excitement at supporting a group of coaches who have already proven themselves to go above and beyond, to take their students (OUR children) above and beyond, and to put in the additional time and energy to make the Academic Teams the success they are.
