Hotdogs: It is a matter of where they are eaten

About: Big Al Wants the Dogs Chicago Style

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I think the taste of a hotdog changes with the atmosphere it is eaten in.

Hot dogs at a ball game taste different than one prepared at home.

Hot dogs at a county fair taste different from the one at the ball park.

It is all about where you eat them. Location. Location. Location.

Epicurean Kentuckian: B.J. Fudge recalls Dairy Queen hot dog

"Folks would come to the window to order with their mind made up and a smile on their face." -BJF
About: Epicurean Kentuckian: Hot Dogs

By Billy Joe Fudge

This photo evoked memories of that simple, less complicated life that we so often lament having lost. In the world in which we find ourselves today there is a lack of appreciation for the simplicity and straightforwardness of the flavor of one.

The hot dog is but one really great example of a society that is consumed with the idea that more is better. I submit that since childhood most Americans would not even recognize the taste of this American iconic food and flavor minus the mounds of condiments that suffocate its simple appeal.

Big Al Wants the Dogs Chicago Style

About: Epicurean Kentuckian Hot Dogs

Big Al Owens writes:
That is a nice dog, but a Chicago dog is far superior to that one. I like that it is an all beef dog. Cheap dogs are just that ...Cheap dogs but a Chicago style hotdog has mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, a kosher pickle, and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed bun... Portillos is the best...

Note: We can't argue the merits of the Chicago dog. They're a delicious, highly evolved version of the American standard. However, they're best eaten with finery--like napkins and celery salt--that we don't always take with us to ballparks and campgrounds. There was even a slightly heated discussion in the Kroger about whether mustard was an unneccesary luxury on a camping trip, and Evan, our resident gourmet, proved that a good and proper dog stands on its own merits. He ate them right off the roasting stick, sans bun. --Pen

Columbia, KY, and surrounding area now more bicycle friendly

Relocation of bicycle racks, installation at church, help of Mayor Bell, local businesses are among many signs of changes for better for bikers

By Gary Rose and Diane Rose

Columbia and the surrounding area have made another step in becoming more bicycle friendly.

It has been brought to the attention of BicyclingAdair.org that a bicycle rack has been relocated to be more useful and that there is a new bicycle rack in the area.

As you first reported on September 1st, the rack that was located in the parking lot at East Fortune and South Reed Street has been relocated on the Square in Columbia. At the racks former location it was neither a safe or secure place for bicycle parking. Racks that are far from an entrance, hard to find, or perceived to be vulnerable to vandalism will not be used by most cyclists.
