Drink as you wish, but don't get behind the wheel About: Charles Marshburn advocates tolerance for nondrinkers To ColumbiaMagazine.com People are free to drink as they wish and it is no one's business. However, when anyone chooses to drink and drive, then it becomes mine and everyone else's who are on the roads business. If you must drink even a few, stay at home or wherever you are. Just don't make it my business by being behind the wheel. Thanks, s/Gene Whicker 2010-09-05 14:48:31 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
Dave Rosenbaum: Moonshine for medicine About: Charles Marshburn urges tolerance for non drinkers Dave Rosenbaum Mr. Marshburn expresses tollerance for moderate drinkers. There are, of course, several potential motives for having a drink. I recall one resident of southern Adair who, in my youth, visited a feller on Harvey's Ridge and bought a gallon of moonshine whiskey, just to keep around the house in case of sickness. Later he remarked, "Don't you know that I never drawed a well breath til that whole gallon was goned." 2010-09-05 14:42:27 | Comments | Printable version
Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Lessons from those Burma Shave signs ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh WISDOM FROM THE ROADSIDE This essay first printed in The Hart County News-Herald, January 8, 2006. First posted, CM, This story was posted on 2007-05-20 at 11:22:21 Back in the late 1980's Robert Fulghum became a celebrity with the publication of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. That book was a collection of essays about wisdom found in everyday places. I remember liking that book a lot, and the idea of finding great truths in common circumstances has always appealed to me. A recent article about the anniversary of the publication of Fulghum's book reminded me of another source of wisdom. Butterflies at Arnolds Landing: Red-spotted Purples About: Beautiful Butterfly Trio at Arnolds Landing To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Red-spotted Purples each and everyone. They love moist asphalt and limestone gravel roads and driveways. I suppose among other attractants, it is moisture and minerals they are after. They also love to feed on carrion and there are tons of dead animals, grasshoppers, butterflies, other insects, and birds mashed into the cracks and crevices of our highways mile after mile. Then each morning after a fog or dew or after a rain the moisture once again brings the fragrance of sustenance to the olfactory glands of these beautiful creatures. Hundreds of Red-spotted Purples perish each day from mid-summer through fall on our highways in Adair County each year. However many more escape by riding the air flow over, under and around our vehicles as we speed through their world. s/Billy Joe Fudge Thanks so much. When a photo of a butterfly, insect, tree, wildflower -or bird or person's face, for that matter - is posted without identification, we always appreciate identification. This information on the Red-spotted Purples is a perfect addition to the photo description. -EW 2010-09-05 10:07:48 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net By Chuck Hinman Many of my memories of growing up are the constant bickering between siblings. I suspect we were a very normal American family and fortunately we grew out of it. Well, kind of.... I had an older brother, Bob, and a little sister, Joy Ann. Because of the age difference, I seemed to have more to bicker about with Bob; he was two years older and "lorded" his physical superiority over me. I whined to Mom when he looked cross-eyed at me. Jody, besides being the baby in the family was five years younger than me and seven years younger than Bob. But she soon learned how to hold her own with her big brothers. Don't feel sorry for her! Fatal Rose Rosette disease shows up in Adair Co. Dreadful plant disease has been found at Trabue House Rose Garden. Once you are completely sure that it is Rose Rosette Disease you need to act fast. RRD is believed to be a virus or virus-like pathogen that has yet to be identified. The disease is transmitted through Eriophyid mites and can travel from plant to plant in your garden. By Barbara Armitage News from the Adair County Garden Club I have a confession - I mother my plants. I talk to them tell them how beautiful they are and that they are growing up so fast. So is it any wonder that when I was faced with the discovery of Rose Rosette disease at the Trabue House Rose Garden a couple of weeks ago I nearly lost it. The distinctive red stems, misshapen leaves and hundreds of thorns on our beautiful Knock Out Rose tree nearly made me cry. It's the helpless feeling of knowing that there isn't anything that I can do. This is one case where my instinctive need to "fix things" won't work.
