Gum Grove was between Glens Fork and Fairplay, KY

About: Reader seeks enlightenment on Gum Grove

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Gum Grove school was located between Glensfork and Fairplay, on what is now called Union Church Road. The school building is no longer standing. There was a house across the road from the school and that building is still standing. My mom attended school there in the 1950's and the library found a photo dating back to 1915 of some students from Gum Grove, so school was held there for several years.

Reader seeks enlightenment on Gum Grove

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Where is or was Gum Grove? I know of Walnut Grove.

s/Ken Page

Mr. Page, this issue also troubles me a great deal. I am in the same quandary. I know that two giant figures of present day Adair County, Mr. Rollin Coomer and Mr. Joseph Gadberry, got headstarts on the rest, even we townies, at Walnut Grove. But I am not well versed in matters Gum Grove; which is to say I plead almost total ignorance. Maybe a reader will enlighten us; or, you might ought to do as I am wanting to do: Show up at the reunion and find out. -EW
