Memorable Old Columbia: The Whittlers, Redux

2010-08-18 - Photo by Linda Waggener. Fountain Plaza, Columbia, KY
A good time was had by all:Storytelling continues today in Downtown Columbia, KY, much as it did in the days chronicled by the late Columbia poet, John Shelley, in his immortal poem, "The Whittlers", which accompanied the color print of the historic Courthouse published by the late James Woody in the mid-1970s. These boys, the elder Eddie Waggener, right, and elder-wannabes and first cousins Jimmy Lawrence, left, and Johnny Vaughn, gave Tuesday evening the same ambiance as in the olden days of Shelley & Woody, though sans cedar sticks and Case knives. The storytelling cousins regaled the assemblage with tales of their exploits when the family owned the Village of Hardscratch, after Johnny's father bought it on an impulse. During their brief but epic tenure Lawrence and Vaughn brought modern mercantile innovations, good government and taught the natives a great deal about the use of fire arms, fishing equipment and how to trap for furs for cash and food to feed their families. -EW

By Sandra Bell

Several former students from Gum Grove School are planning to have a potluck/reunion on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at the picnic shelter of Old Concord Church, 5996 Fairplay RD, Columbia, KY.

We have been trying to locate any old photos of the school but so far we have had little success. I was wondering if anyone who enjoys this website might have access to any old photos from the school days? I can be contacted by email at sandrak@duo-county.com -Sandra Bell
