Carol Perkins: School Bullies, Part II In the second, and author says last word, on the subject of bullying in public schools today, she takes administrators to task for not taking responsiblity for their part in maintaining discipline. She says that the problem is not just about young teachers launching their careers. It affects veteran educators as well: "Even we veteran teachers have not escaped undaunted." My last year was the worst year of my career. Next previous Carol Perkins column: School Bullies, Part I By Carol Perkins I must not be finished. I thought I had said enough, but then you, the readers, reminded me of more issues. This will be my last. I think I will start Bully Buster Parties like Tea Parties. Wonder if anyone would show up? Another writer from Knifley anxious for high speed internet About: Resident one block off KY 551 still living with dialup To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I also have dial-up in Knifley. I have asked and even begged for 2 years to add high speed internet here. One of my neighbors that only lives 300-400 ft down the road one way and another neighbor about 1/2 mile up the road both have high speed. But the ones in between do not. Strange isn't it. I am so tired of having dial-up. s/Lynn Rush If you're tired of waiting, you might petition the Columbia-Adair County Utilities District to get the service to you. They seem to get things done faster than any utilities provider in South Central Kentucky, though they are not now in the internet provider business. -EW 2010-08-15 17:12:34 | Comments | Printable version
Carol Perkins article on School Bullies draws interest After posting the article last week on School Bullies, Part I, we received the following letter: I was wondering how I could get in touch with the lady that posted this article. I have a niece who has been bullied since the 6th grade and we have asked for her to be home schooled and they tell us they can't let us do that. I was thinking with this lady's help and knowledge maybe we can finally get this child home schooled to stop what she is going through. This child has been in mental hospitals because of it and also had a problem with cutting herself. So please if there's any way what so ever to get in touch with her please have her call me . . . Any help would be greatly appreciated."The letter was signed, and an Adair County telephone was given. We're forwarding the letter to Carol Perkins as requested by the sender. A second article on the subject will be posted today, Sunday, August 15, 2010. 2010-08-15 17:01:46 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Carol Perkins

Resident one block off KY 551 still living with dialup About: Knifley resident cant get broadband at home on KY 551 Upon reading Mr. Beard''s letter about services that he cannot get from windstream, I can relate to the problem also. I talked with people at Windstream and was told the same story. I live on Casey Creek Road, about one block off of Hwy. 551. Mind you, 1 block off of Hwy 551. The company will not supply service to my house. I still have the slowest of slow service, meaning dialup. How sad is that? In the year 2010? I thought I would buy an IPad, wireless sounded good to me. I was told that even AT+T which services IPad, was not avaliable to me because of my location, but down the road on 551 heading toward Columbia about 6 miles it was available. It seems to me that in this technical world that we live in we should not have this problem. Hopefully someone at one of these corporations will take our problem, think about our situation and resolve it for us.Cordially, Bev Robb 2010-08-15 13:00:35 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Technology News
It is great to be a Columbian A town where there are wonderful neighbors and friends when you need them By Allen Owens I was reminded today at how wonderful it is to be from Columbia, Kentucky. Mr. Terry Dudley of the ALS Carwash behind Mike Stephens Pharmacy saw me washing my 1976 Mercury Monarch and came over to advise me how wonderful the pre-soak works to wash your car. I have also been impressed at how much this community pulls together when we lose one of our own. It was such a sad loss to lose Hillary Hadley in the horrible way that happened earlier this week, but the people of Columbia have pulled together for the Hadley Family. In 1985 I was in a horrific accident here in Columbia which claimed the life of my best friend Robbie Hennessey. I was overwhelmed with support from the fine Christian Community that we live in. I just wanted to say: Thank-you for being such wonderful neighbors and friends when people need you! 2010-08-15 12:42:53 | Comments | Printable version

We fly the flag: FAQ's To ColumbiaMagazine.comBelow is a link to a good explanation of the flag code of the United States. It covers how the flag is displayed, when it should be at half staff and who may order it to half staff. If answers a lot of FAQ's. The incident that has occurred here the last few days has been very tragic and I sure understand all angles of what has transpired. The events here just show the care and concern we have for one another here in Adair County. I believe we all should read the flag code rules, learn from our actions and continue to honor the flag accordingly. http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/faq.htm#q031 s/Joe Hare 2010-08-15 05:42:35 | Comments | Printable version
