Billy Joe Fudge, the tree man, thinks right

Adair County Printing Company CEO thinks Billy Joe Fudge has rational outlook on trees, but can't say the same for some so-called Green Thinkers and impractical Tree Huggers.
About, Kentucky Color: Giants Among Us. Fairgrounds Oaks

By Ralph R. Waggener

The article about the life and death of trees was put very well.

Most so called tree huggers misunderstand the process of the life of a tree. Tree farming is very important to our environment just as the harvesting and replanting process helps control carbon.

Poetry: Not known, a sonnet

Not known -a sonnet for the birthday of Mandy Bailey
Can I create a thing not known before
or is each color, shape, and sound, each word,
each insight ever sending up a roar
awaiting one whose senses are not blurred.

Can I with boldness seize unlikely goals
or is each possibility, each choice,
each passion always setting up controls
ensnaring one without commanding voice.

Can I with meekness tend the silent heart
or is each need too fragile for a touch,
each kindness not enough to kindle start
compelling one to seek the right how much.

I wonder if the greatest artists say,
I will not let the next one slip away.

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

The summer of 2006 marks the anniversary of an important season of prophetic courage in American church history. Few people know the story - especially around these parts - but the narrative is worth preserving and passing along. The time was forty years ago, 1966, and the setting was Bells Methodist Church in Camp Springs, MD, near Washington, D. C. That congregation began in the first decade of the 19th century. By 1966 Bells had grown to a membership of 1600. The area around the church in Prince Georges County had changed over the years from rural to suburban, and the historic church grounds and cemetery were hard by Andrews Air Force Base.

100 Years Ago:
The trip to Louisville, KY reduced to 4 hours

By "Jim"

A century ago, the thought of making the trip from Columbia to Louisville at the breakneck speed of 25 miles an hour must have been been heart-stopping.

That came to mind while researching the News earlier today for an upcoming column and the following brief entry "hove into view." In but three short sentences, the writer (most likely, long time News man J.E. Murrell), quietly noted - perhaps not without a sigh for the retreating and a measure of trepidation for the advancing - the passing of one era and the advent of another:
The old drummer's wagon will soon be a thing of the past. Mr. T.M. Carr, representing the Adrian Fence Company, Louisville, made Columbia last Friday in a two-seated automobile. He worked the town and started on his return trip to Louisville at 2:30 p.m., saying he would make the city in time for supper. It is one hundred miles to the city. (Adair County News, August 3, 1910.)
That's just slightly faster than today's Lindsey Wilson College athlete on a bicycle could make it. -CM

Good feeling reading about migrant school program

About: Back to School picnic held Saturday, July 31, 2010

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

It gave me a warm feeling to read about Adair's migrant school program. We all gain when the children are educated in this nation's schools, no matter who they are, where they come from, who's paying for it or where they end up when they leave here. Thanks to those of you who are working with these kids - it's the right thing to do!

s/George Kolbenschlag

Amen. Not exclusively a Christian program, but a very Christ like concept at work, isn't it? Not exclusively an Adair County innovation, but very much in the spirit The Adair County Way. Thanks for a needed homily. -EW

They are called the "mean girls." Every school has them, and they wield their authority in and out of the classroom.
