"You're doing what?" Guy was flabbergasted. I am, after all, a play-it-safe woman.

The story begins with a trip to Panama City Beach. Eight women, all AARP eligible and most card-carrying members, enjoyed the lapping waves of a pristine beach and the sun for a week.

Tom Chaney No. 265 review: Road to Savoyard

Of Writers and Their Books No. 265. 1 August 2010. Book review of In the Pennyrile of Old Kentucky and Men Things and Events by Savoyard (Eugene W. Newman) about the world famous little town in North Metcalfe County. How Savoyard got it's name and it's nickname, "Chicken Bristle."
The next earlier Tom Chaney column, a book review of Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham

By Tom Chaney
Email: Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com

The Road to SavoyardA fella asked me the other day how to get to Savoyard.

The answer was a bit complicated.

I allowed as how if he were in Center, once called Lafayette (pronounced 'Lay-fat'), he could just go down to the south end of town, turn left, then jog a quick right on a nice black top and he'd be there.

On the other hand were he in Hiseville, often yclept Goose Horn, he just had to follow the road from Griderville through town then directly take the Y to the left and he'd fetch up smack dab near Savoyard.

The next earlier Chuck Hinman story: Mom's Little Helper Boy Is Chuck Hinman your favorite Sunday with CM columnist, as many tell us? If so, we hope you'll drop him a line by email. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

By Chuck Hinman

It's summertime seventy-seven years ago (1933). I am an eleven year old barefoot Nebraska farm boy. It's 10:30 AM and Mom is planning dinner for her family of five.

Today's dinner is strutting around in the front yard, crowing and showing off before the rest of the flock. He is a white leghorn rooster to be selected by Mom. She puts on a sun bonnet and light jacket and heads out toward the cave with a bucket of boiling water. That was the site of all her grizzly work so her family could enjoy a wonderful meal without knowing the sordid details in the preparation of that meal.

Time Controversy: Arizona does not change times

But changes in other states create illusion that state is in two time zones
About: Commentary: One state, one time zone or no change

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

Arizona does not observe daylight saving time. The people here do not change their clocks.

It just happens that during the summer when the states in the Pacific time zone "spring foward" they are on the same time as Arizona and in the fall when those states in the mountain time zone "fall back" they are on the same time as Arizona.

The four-eyed jumping spider is an amazing creature.

As you might guess they have amazing eyesight and boy can they jump. Jumping spiders are, generally speaking, very small. The one in the accompanying photos is about 1/4 inch and is sitting on the hood of my Tahoe.

Time Controversy: Arizona on one time except for Navajo Nation

About: Commentary: One state one time zone or no change

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Just wanted to make a correction. I live in Arizona and we never change time. We are on Mountain Standard Time all year long. We never "spring forward" or "fall back." The only exception to this on the Navajo Nation which does observe Daylight Saving time.
