Nancy Evins: Riots of Passage

Suggestions on revisions of requirements of marriage vows and agreements
The next earlier Nancy Evins column: Plotting a thrifty departure

By Nancy Evins

It was in an anthropology course in graduate school not too many years ago. Each of us was assigned a tribe and a village.

My tribe was the Konyak Nagas, also called the naked Nagas for very obvious reasons, a former headhunting group in India's northeastern frontier. My village was Rusembilia, a fishing town on the eastern coast of the Malay peninsula. These I were to compare with my own town, Lake City, a village in east Tennessee near Appalachia.

1900-1910: Madstones were working miracles

In the first decade of the 20th Century, many practitioners of the the art of curing hydrophobia and snake bites with madstones were reported in Adair County. At one point in the 1960s, a famous man ofTaylor County, KY, was in possession of, and was an authority on, madstones. We are trying to contact him for more information. Also, there is an entry, "Try a Madstone," on in The Old Farmer's Almanac.com -CM

Carol Perkins: London

Her trip to London, she says, left her feeling like she had been on a Chevy Chase vacation
The next earlier Carol Perkins column, Hoosier hospitality in outlet mall

By Carol Perkins

As the Fourth of July approaches, I am reminded of my visit years ago to England, the country from whom we gained our independence and who is now our greatest ally.

Nine women and a very brave husband of one in the group, our designated leader, flew to London for a seven day tour in the midst of subway bombings and train strikes. I had no fear. Well, maybe a little, but not enough to stay at home! On the long flight, each of us had a window or an aisle seat, as we requested. What we failed to request, however, was that those seats be together.

Stars, dogs, and a bit of Gershwin

We now are in the dog days of summer. These days from mid-July and into August usually are the hottest and stickiest of the season. These are the days when weather conditions can suck out your energy and leave you soaked with sweat before you even begin a task outdoors.

Biblical writers knew all about this kind of environment. The psalmist compared the misery of carrying an unconfessed and unforgiven sin to the debilitating distress of a sweltering day. The beginning of Psalm 32 reads:

Poetry by Robert Stone: Some fear a sonnet

Some fear: a sonnet for several friends
- by Robert Stone
Some fear the unknown and avoid the new
so never learn the joys that linger near
and miss the thrill with caution to pursue
the growth discovered in a wider sphere.

Some fear the known and set their limits close
so never find the paths that set one free
and settle for the commons that engross
the shrinking soul demanding guarantee.

Some fear their fears and boldly push ahead
so always have more possibilities
and seize the opportunities to spread
the wonders of adventure as they please.

Hold fast each nurturing relationship
And in the buddings all temptations nip.
