Says visitors can't identify man in hat on water tower

About: Raider Bob on Holladay Place water tower

The only comment I want to submit is this: We have a great view of Raider Bob from our home. Several of our visitors (six yesterday) have asked us what the image is. None of them have been able to identify a man in a large hat, even with the best explanation I could give. It would have been nice to have something identifiable on our wonderful new water tank.

Writer said it was originally a good idea. But times have changed. Regardless, he says, carnival is important part of fair, and should be part of consideration in upcoming years.

About: Says prices to fair set by carnival, not Jaycees

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:
This was a good thing when it first started. As I recall the first year the Jaycees had the fair they did this and it went over very well and that's just what they stuck with.

Columbia Editor/Publisher asks: Wet or Wet?

There reasons for both positions, writer says. We're wet. Illegally wet, at present. But should we stay that way, or set up legal controls for the sale of alcoholic beverages. On balance, he says, it clearly comes down on one side, in his opinion

By Ralph R. Waggener

The wet or dry question will always be debated.

Is there a right answer?

Who knows, we all have different views on this subject. You can ask everyone and everyone will give a different answer on how to handle the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Notable Adair Countians from History: A.H. Ballard

"Truly born again Adair Countians are more Adair Countian than the natives and accepted as such." - E. Waggener, Ye Olde CM editor.
If ever the above quote were true, it was true for Arthur Henry (A.H.) Ballard, Ohioan by birth and Columbian by choice who removed to southern Kentucky in early manhood, and, with one brief hiatus, stayed the course for the rest of his life. His obituary in the Adair County News (December 12, 1945) read in part:

Letter: Jaycees do wonderful job,
but fair admissions prices need review

About: Why not free admission for those who just want Fair Food

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I totally agree. There should be a smaller admission fee for those that just want to come and enjoy the fair and a different fee for those who want to ride. More money would be spent inside the fair if it wasn't so high to get in. The Jaycees do a wonderful job, but the admission price is too high for a little county fair.
