Wants information on Adair Co. and Great Depression To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I'm trying to find out any info on how The Great Depression affected Adair county. Was Adair hit hard during the economic meltdown like many other parts of the country or did it fare better than most? Did people rush to the banks to get their savings out after Black Tuesday and did any banks close in the area? Did Adair have any major droughts at the time? Have you printed any stories from this time period from fellow Adair citizens? Much appreciated! Thinks fair should have two tier tickets Those who ride in carnival should pay one price; those who don't should have lower price ticket, writer suggests About: Why not free admission for those who just want Fair Food? Not that it really matters much but Michele and I thought $10 each plus parking to get into the fairgrounds for an hour or two was too much also. Those who drink do have choices, Dave Burton says About: Bigger problems here in the Bible Belt To ColumbiaMagazine.com: Not saying I'm for nor against a "Dry" vote here, I have that choice where I live. Carol Perkins: The Hitching Post 'James Sullivan came to Metcalfe County from Russell County when he was just a boy and died in 1952 when he was seventy five and I was only six," Carol Sullivan writes. "By all accounts, he might easily have been the greatest man I never knew. He was certainly a progressive one." The next earlier Carol Perkins column, Who is watching your children? By Carol Sullivan Perkins My grandfather, James Monroe Sullivan, ran a country store and established the first post office in what is known as Cork. Supposedly, he named the post office after our ancestors from Cork, Ireland; however, it may have derived from the rows of bottles sealed with corks, before Prohibition, that lined the shelves. A man wanted a drink, down came the bottle and off came the cork. Nancy Evins: Plotting a thrifty departure When she made cemetery arrangements, she got the plot she wanted plus a contract which allows for grave opening and closing weekends and holidays except Christmas - and she concludes this column with a unique grave marker plan no one else in the world could have imagined. The next earlier Nancy Evins column: "I remember Daddy By Nancy Evins This was one of life's rare experiences, to be done, perhaps once in a lifetime by some and not at all by many others. I just recently bought my cemetery plot. Truthfully, I really thought my parents, whose plots were thoughtfully purchased by my paternal grandfather, had taken care of that for me. They had hesitantly inquired if I would like to be buried near them. I had quipped, "Only if I can be buried south. All bridge hands are played by south in bridge columns." The subject was never brought up again. When several plots became available in the county where I live, I consulted my children whether they would like to lie beside their mommy. I understood the conversation between my two offspring was rather agitated and the answer was to buy just two. I don't know if they plan to flip for it or not. Columbia Womans Club plants in memory trees About: Tree planting program should be annual affair commentary by Ralph R. Waggener To ColumbiaMagazine.com: The Columbia Woman's Club plants a tree in memory of a member of the club, when that member dies. We identify that member with a small plaque. What better lasting memorial. Other than trees, I often wonder why all businesses that have a front door, don't put a planter filled with flowers beside it? Once planted, there would not need much up-keep - just some water. And don't forget backs of buildings that are visible to the public. s/Vonnie Kolbenschlag 2010-07-11 02:57:52 | Comments | Printable version Birthdays and Anniversaries for July 11 Happy Anniversary, Jamie and Elizabeth Head | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Kevin and Norma Jean Hoskins (1987) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Tiffany and Jason Collins | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Anniversary, Tony and Melissa Bragg (1987) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Beverly Smith | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Herschel Harmon (1940) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jackie Tucker | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Jackstin Cooper Stang (2018) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Justin Spencer (2003) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Kyler Chase Burton | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Mark Allen Fudge | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Nicholas Boils (1998) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Riley Harrison (2010) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Rylee Gilbert (2002) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Sam DeRossett (1988) | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthday, Walter Blankenship, Jr. | (Updates/Corrections) Happy Birthdays, brothers and sister, Bill Janes, Herbert Janes, Frieda Janes Smith | (Updates/Corrections) In Memoriam Bro.
