Court panel rules for drys in Russell Co., KY wet-dry election

The Court of Appeals ruled this morning, Friday, July 9, 2010, in favor of the drys in the wet-dry election in the Lake and Jamestown precincts of Russell County, according to information received from the office of Russell County Circuit Court Clerk Tony Kerr, today.

Alcoholic beverages will not be sold in Russell County as a result of the November 24, 2009, election which a three-judge Kentucky Court of Appeals Panel has invalidated.

The ruling rendered today upheld the ruling against the wet forces by Judge Julia H. Adams, a special judge in the case, who invalidated the elections held on November 24, 2009, because the KRS statute under which the election was held did not authorize local option elections by precinct, and also because the question put to the voters did not substantially comply with the specific language in the statute.

Lindsey Wilson College Associate Professor of Human Services Jodi Crane does not mean to appear overzealous when she talks about the potential play therapy holds for some individuals.

"I hate to use the word magic, but that would be a good way to describe it," Crane said.

On June 24-25, 2010, a total of 55 mental-health professionals and students from six states had a firsthand opportunity to learn about play therapy when they attended the second conference sponsored by the LWC Appalachian Play Therapy Center.

100 Years ago, editor lamented the taking of trees

By "Jim"

The photo of Columbia's own Death Valley brought to mind this snippet from the July 8, 1909 Adair County News. The "valuable improvements" for which several veteran locust trees gave their lives, were in preparation for the construction of the new Russell & Co. Building, completed in early 1910.
Valuable Improvements
The Isenburg corner looks like it has lost its best friends. The locust trees which have stood there for many years have been cut down, giving it a naked appearance. The property belongs to Mr. J.O. Russell, who had the trees removed in order to get the proper grade for a concrete pavement. The work is in progress and in a short time will be completed.
Thanks, "Jim." Maybe pretty soon the leadership will let our Future Problem Solvers weigh the balance of good and evil in any "progress," and let us know, whether, on balance, it is good. -EW

I thank you for publishing the gravestone for Lingan. It means a lot to my family to know where he rests.

Lingan Wilson Selby is also my ancestor. I have been trying to locate Lingan's "Oath of Fidelity" or revolutionary war record but without success. Lingan's brothers are easily documented, but, Lingan is nowhere to be found. There are several references that he took the "Oath of Fidelity" with his brothers.
