Conservation officers help rescue flood victims

In Metcalfe Co., conservation officers Jeremy McQuery and Brian Gibson rescue elderly lady after waters of Little Barren surrounded her home

From Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Conservation officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources spent much of the weekend evacuating people in the wake of severe storms, flooding and mudslides that claimed at least four lives and closed dozens of roads across the commonwealth.

"Our officers have the specialized training and equipment that allows them to help victims of natural disasters," said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett. "This weekend, they've been out saving lives."

Flooding: Little Barren at 18 Feet

2010-05-06 - Sulphur Well, KY - Photo by Becky Jessie. Water was 18 feet above the Little Barren at Sulphur Well!
If by chance you wondered how high water in Little Barren River was on May 1, 2010, just check out this photo. The bottom of that bridge is 18 feet above the river bed! You can take that as fact, because Cora Emma and Junior Jessie, of Sulphur Well, just made a trip to the river with a 100 ft. tape measure and checked it, especially for this publication. Somebody had to get wet doing that. What heros! Another photo in the group showed that the water had climbed several more inches and was almost ready to run over onto the bridge floor before it was through. Pictured in the photo is Brandon Shirley, a Metcalfe County CPA, standing on next to nothing, while watching the swiftly moving current. One thing about it, the boy is bound to be steady on his feet! There is no word yet on estimated damage to Metcalfe County from the recent storm.

Phillips Hall Residents get sweet treat

Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

By Duane Bonifer

Residents of Lindsey Wilson College's Phillips Hall got a sweet study break Wednesday night for being the most generous with their spare change.

Residents of the all-female residence hall donated the most pennies in a recent penny war between the college's residence halls and apartments. As a reward, they got to decide where the pennies were donated - to Sugarfoot Farm Rescue - and they were rewarded with dessert pizzas during finals week.

Finals on the college's A.P. White Campus continue through the end of this week. Spring commencement will be at 10amCT on Saturday, May 8, 2010, in Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard DR, Columbia, KY.

A total of 199 undergraduate and graduate diplomas will be conferred at the ceremony, which will include a commencement address by LWC Chancellor John B. Begley.

Baby So Soft campaign now needs just 251.5 blankets!

Bonnie Rodgers reports that, as of 4:04pmCT, Thursday, May 6, 2010, the Baby So Soft campaign needs just 251.5 blankets to reach its goal of 1,000 blankets to give to the Kosair Children's Hospital's Neonatal Infant Care Unit (NICU).One thousand soft holding blankets will be enough to give one to each baby in the Kosair Children's Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit over the course of one year.

In all 715 blankets and $335 in cash (33.5 blanket equivalents) have been donated at this time.

Latest organizational heroes have been the Ft. Knox National Credit Union in Campbellsville, KY, which sent 27 blankets, and the United Citizens Bank of Southern, KY, with banks in Columbia, Campbellsville, and Russell Springs, donated 23 blankets.

Time to finish the job for Monica

The drive has taken on new meaning, since the flooding of the home of its founder, Monica Rodgers-Shuffett. Robert Harmon, whose grandson Jaymeson recently had a stay in the NICU at Kosair, whose family has been a big supporter of the drive, said, "We ought to finish it up for Monica. She's done so much and has been through so much in the past week," adding a rallying cry for the campaign.

Bonnie Rodgers thinks community can do it

"I think we're going to reach Monica's goal," her mother, Bonnie Rodgers said. "We know of one school which will be donating one blanket for every teacher in the school. There are still organizations as far away as Monticello who have promised to help, and we still have a number of churches which planned to turn in gifts but didn't hold services on Sunday because of the rain."Any amount is welcome, she said. Whether a hero wants to step up and donate the entire 248.5 blankets or $2,485 to buy them, or an individual wants to stop by Quality Personnel and contribute just $10, $20 or even $50.

The Campaign will take donations of blankets and cash through Friday, May 14, 2010. The drop off point is Quality Personnel, 308 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY. For more information call (270) 384-2866. For more information click on Baby So Soft

Lt. Jude sends sobering message about teen drinking

Graduation time is also time of temptation

Dear Editor,

We are nearing the time where many young people will celebrate a lifetime of accomplishments as they graduate from high school and move toward their life goals. Family and friends will gather together for a festive occasion to commemorate this awesome milestone.

Traditionally, this is also a time when alcohol enters into the mix and brings tragic results for all involved. Alcohol is the most commonly used drug among American youth and it kills 5,000 teens every year.

Birds: Good time for flycatchers, whip-poor-wills, vireos

No Bird Watchers meeting on Monday

By Wendy Butler Burt, President
News from the Adair County Bird Watchers

Good afternoon, birders!

If you've been out and about with your binoculars, you've had a lot to see! I was in Wisconsin for a week and, when I returned after Adair County's deluge, I was surprised to see that summer had arrived in my absence.

And with summer came lots of species that I hadn't seen/heard before I left - great crested flycatchers, whip-poor-wills, red-eyed vireos, yellow breasted chats, etc. And some of our longer term residents are hatching young.

Anyway, I must go out of town so will not hold our monthly meeting on Monday, May 10, 2010. But, when I return, I hope to schedule another bird walk - maybe one evening. If anyone would like to suggest a good place for a walk, please let me know. Warm regards, -Wendy Butler Burt

An amen for praise for road department

About: Thanks to Ann, Road Department, Emergency responders

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I agree wholeheartedly and really appreciate the super quick efforts of the road department. I contacted my magistrate, Billy Coffey, and our county road foreman on Sunday out of concern that the school bus would try to come down the road and not get turned around at the bridge. Both offered to contact the transporation director.

Initial estimates indicate $15+ million flood damage in Adair Co.

Story in progress. Click on headline for story plus photos. Additional numbers and photos will be added this morning.
Columbia and Adair County face huge rebuilding effort, with $10.7 million damage estimated to Columbia Sewer Plant, over $5 million to Adair County Roads and Bridges. Damage Survey Reports are being coordinated in the Adair County Judge Executive office while immediate response teams, supplemented by contractors, are rushing to make roads passable, get Columbia sewer and water systems back to normals, and assist businesses, farms, and individuals.
Help from higher up is on the way: State, Federal representatives already familiar sight in Columbia, KY, will be increasing, coming to the aid of CJE Ann Melton and Adair County Emergency Management Director Greg Thomas' recovery team already in place. Representative Ed Whitfield's Field Representative, Sandy Simpson, and Kentucky Division Region 8 Manager Chris Hecker here Wednesday. FEMA teams expected in a few days.
Senator Vernie McGaha has visited to gather information for aid, and Rep. Bam Carney is in touch with local Disaster Recovery team at Adair County Courthouse. Calls have been received from U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield, Brigadier General John W. Heltzel, Director of Kentuckys Division of Emergency Management and Deputy Commander; Kentucky National Guard, and other offering assistance.

By Ed Waggener

Officials are assessing the damage caused by Sunday's flooding in Adair County, and it is overwhelming.

But it will be much less, and a return to normal will be much quicker because of decisive leadership and an amazing community organization of road and utility crews, emergency management teams, and the instant set up of a two fold effort in the County Judge's office: 1) To take care of immediate needs with local resources, and concurrently, 2) To document the disaster with metrics, photos, and narratives which will facilitate the flow of state and federal funds desperately needed to meet the challenges the community faces.
