What a beautiful day (again) and what a great time to be out watching birds (again).

This morning, in addition to my "regulars," for the first time this season I saw a green heron, a blue-gray gnatcatcher and heard a Maryland yellowthroat and prairie warbler. So the birds really are continuing on their great migration.

The COF: Whether Weather or not

By the COF at Dun Roman
High on a ridge o'er beautiful Downtown Knifley

I've heard many variations on this prognostication ditty o'er the years but this is the way I first heard it (in a former lifetime) from an old monk at the Cistercian Monastery near Conyers, Georgia:
"Damp with dew the Matins hay
Nay much chance of rain that day.

If paddock lawn awakes bone dry
by eve'n song the clouds may cry.

But weathers fury in the Gulf
oft mean weather signs are off".
For those not familiar with the "Liturgy of the Hours" Matins is the first of the seven hours and is typically sung at sunrise. Evening Song, or Vespers is the 6th hour and usually sung in the late afternoon or evening.I've found that the prediction holds up pretty well in various parts of the country and is almost fail-safe in the Spring time. It also has the benefit of being extremely local.
