Sometimes a photograph you take will give you an idea for another photograph or better yet a photographic series. This always happens to me. A photograph of a friend combined with a video about New York, in your face, Street Photography gave me the inspiration for a portrait series featuring the people of Jamestown. Another photograph of old cars resting comfortably in a unusual storage facility renewed my interest in old cars shot in the late night darkness or the very, very early morning hours.

Carol Perkins: I witnessed the Civil Rights Movement

I witnessed the Civil Rights Movement Recalling the scene on Tv, and the real superheroes: Dr. King, High School integration, Clem Haskins, Coach Diddle, Dwight Smith, the kids who integrated her high school
The next earlier Carol Perkins story: Perfect Vision

By Carol Perkins

I witnessed the Civil Rights Movement from my living room, night after night on the evening news. Sadly, the marches, speeches, destruction, and tragedies were not exaggerated; they were very genuine.

Long before the movement came our way, I lived where white girls and boys and black boys and girls did not go to school together nor did they socialize together, drink from the same water fountain, or use the same public bathrooms. Until I was a senior, I had never really known teenagers who weren't white. Honestly, I don't remember assessing whether this was fair or unfair. It just was.

Poetry: Daffodil, O' Daffodil by Billy Joe Fudge

Poetry: Daffodil, O' Daffodil

by Billy Joe Fudge
Daffodil, O Daffodil
Bursting forth in Spring,
Suddenly and splendidly
Making spirits sing.

Daffodil, O Daffodil
Yellow soft yet bright,
Razes all the Winter gray
As dawn wrecks the night.

Daffodil, O Daffodil
We just purely say,
Your flush each year just simply,
Takes our breath away.

Where Do We Go From Here?
Sociology and Compassion

Once, during my shortish college teaching career, I had a magnificent colleague in the history department of one school who gave short shrift to the field of sociology and to the adherents and practitioners thereof.

He once defined a sociologist for me as "one who stands in constant amazement at the perfectly obvious." Experience has proven that to be true over and over.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Wonder waits

Wonder Waits
a sonnet by Robert Stone
A chance encounter leads to some unknown,
a part of which is striking chords within.
A wonder waits to be by each his own
an entrance to a new let us begin.

A hungry need will not be satisfied,
enough is not a concept understood.
Desire for common threads will not subside
and masks itself as following the good.

A stirring help is always near at hand,
rejection is a fear to overcome.
A yearning for a selfless way to stand
may lead to joy and banish all the numb.

High expectation follows miracle
and disappointment speaks satirical.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984), the famed photographer who is probably best known for his awe-filled images of Yosemite Valley, had some choice words to share about good photographs. He said, "You don't take a photograph, you make it." Adams' contemporary, Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898-1995), the photographer famed for capturing the sailor and nurse kissing on V-J Day in Times Square, once quipped, "It is more important to click with people than to click the shutter."

Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 192: What's that smell?

It's Just Me Again 192: What's That Smell The writer tells the smell of money in Spring in Nebraska, and catalogs redolent memories of his past, in an essay evoking memories of a literary technique in Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward Angels A passage labeled "The Golden World." The late Prof. Katie Murrell used the work in one-hour Interpretative Reading class at Lindsey Wilson College, sixty years ago.

Connie and I used to have this little game we played every evening when I arrived home from work. While still embraced and with the aroma of a supper like only Connie could cook as a backdrop, I would screw up my nose and tease her with the words "what stinks?" Never one to be outdone she always had a caustic response.
