An interesting response to Chuck Hinman Long Johns story

Here is an interesting response to Chuck Hinman's "Long-John Weather in Nebraska" -ROBERT H. STONE

Mr. Hinman:

My son sent me a copy of your December article, "Long John Weather in Nebraska." Like you, I was born in Nebraska (Kearney) and, like you, I wore union suits in the winter time around the house and to school as a boy. We moved to Colorado in the mid-1950's and I became a city boy. Since I had a paper route, I didn't mind long underwear and wore them about six months out of the year.

Remembering Luther and Dorothy Collins: Wonderful memories

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have such wonderful memories of Luther and Dorothy Collins.

I think the term wonderful comes to mind because they were both truly wonderful people.

When I think of downtown Columbia I will always remember the Corner Drug Store and the warm welcome that always awaited you there.

My very first airplane ride was with Mr.Collins from his beloved Lu-Dot field.

To me this couple represented all those things that make Columbia a special place to live.

Kentucky Color: Mockingbird is Cock of the Walk

By Billy Joe Fudge

This Northern Mockingbird is indeed the Cock of the Walk. He has guarded his stash of Crabapples from ruffian Bluejays and marauding flocks of starlings all winter. From the highest perch on top of my unused fireplace chimney he has launched noisy dive bomber attacks upon all those intending to mooch from his fruit pantry. Billy Joe Fudge

Sonnet reminds of own Unsorted items

Poetry by Robert Stone: Sonnet: Unsorted Items
To Robert Stone/ColumbiaMagazine.com

This sonnet reminds me of why I want to find a place in the house to put a hope chest. I would keep old but treasured items in it.Family and friends would be welcome to open it, go inside, and and enjoy looking at the things inside for the memories that they bring, nobody would be allowed to sort and throw away these items.

I have one of Benji's old baby shoes from when he was 4 months old, I have old toys that belong to both Benji and Chris.

I have artwork and essays that each of them made when they were young children:) I have one or two things that I wrote and made when I was a young child:)

Remembering Luther Collins: Worked at Collins Drug Store

About: Obituary: Luther Collins, 91, Adair Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

In memory of Mr.Collins.I worked at the drug store for Mr. and Mrs. Collins for a number of years. They were so good to me. It was a joy to know them.

I remember so many things they taught me about life and how to be a good honest person no matter where you were or who you were with.

I remember how Mrs. Collins taught me to bake homemade pies and make chili.

I married in 1965 and moved to Glasgow, KY, where I live now.

It about broke my heart to have to leave them. I will be grateful for both of them. They were great people to have as my friends.

They were also great friends to my Daddy and our family.
