Julia Conover celebrates 95th birthday

Julia Conover celebrated her 95th birthday on Sunday, February 28, 2010, with a party at the Royal Manor Apartments where she lives.

About 45 family members and several friends attended the big celebration. Julia is amazing as she can remember things I can't even remember and she has seen a lot of changes in Columbia in her lifetime.

She use to live in the big white house behind the Old Grade School (which is now Adanta) on Woody Avenue but in the last few years has moved to Royal Manor Apartments but she still lives on her own and gets around well and like I said, remembers everything. We wish her many more birthdays. --Diane Benningfield

About: Birds of Kentucky: Cardinal muscled out by Robins Eastern Towhees

Great. We needed Eastern Towhees in Birds OK. And CM and Bub Polston will bow to your expertise, unless Bub Polston objects vehemently, and unless the ranking Adair County resident ornithologist Wendy Burt, whose ruling we accept in things avian and non-Chicken Hawk, overrules your call. -EW

Poem Critique by BJ Fudge: Water Cure by Dr. J.T. Jones

About: 100 years ago: The Unlamented Death of Sam C. Lawrence

By Billy Joe Fudge

I have just a few comments about Dr. J. T. Jones' beautiful poem, "Water Cure."
  • The poem is harmonically integrated with mathematical precision.
  • Four stanzas.Four pairs of rhyming lines in each stanza.Eight lines in each stanza.Eight syllables in each line.First pair of lines in each stanza is rhymed with the vowel "o" sound.Last pair of lines in each stanza is rhymed with the vowel "I" sound.Rhyming is perfectly pitched through the entirety of each rhyming word with the exception of "wi"thin and "be"gin in the second rhyming pair in the third stanza.
"Physic" has to do with purging the system so you can conjure up your own images about the "Then to the dogs your physic fling" line.
CM Policy: Nice Critiques, such as this one, of original literary works on ColumbiaMagazine.com are welcome. However, as we do not have a College Education License, we'll limit the critiques to that of the orginal work. Sometimes, universities offer Criticism of the works of Shakespeare, criticism of that critic of Shakespeare, criticism of the critic of the critic of the works of Shakespeare, ad infinitum and ad nauseum, until it causes serious brain spin, flinging bits gray matter into outer space; so we can't have that on our conscience. It goes without saying at un-nice criticism won't be tolerated. -EW
