University professor needs loan of Digital Video Projector

Will rent if necessary; otherwise an Associate Producer Credit may be in the offing

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am not sure how or where this could be posted on the website, but any help given would be greatly appreciated.

I am a professor at Campbellsville University where I teach film and video production. My class will be shooting a music video in March as part of our course work, where the class will be involved in the shooting of a music video directed by an entertainment industry veteran. We are in need of a Digital Video Projector, so that we may display a movie on a white wall. Unfortunately we do not have access to one, and the class is in dire need of one, to use just for ONE day.

Judge Melton offers GBBC checklist assistance today

The Big Final Push is now on! it's the last day of the Great Backyard Bird Count. Mighty Columbia, KY is in First Place in the Nation. With everybody's help we will finish No. 1

Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton has offered assistance for those Adair Countians who do not have computers but would like to help keep Adair County stay No. 1 in the Nation for 2010 in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Her statement reads:
"I am so pleased with all the work all of the local media, the Chamber of Commerce, local busineses, schools, and church groups have done; most of all, I am so impressed by what Barbara Armitage and Wendy Burt and the Adair County Garden Club have done working to bring this very high honor to Columbia and Adair County, KY.

"It appears that if everybody helps, we really can be No. 1. It is so wonderful to be this close to a significant national honor."We in county government are doing what we can to support the efforts of the Adair County Garden Club and all others involved. I hope every citizen will want to do their part.

"As an added incentive, We're printing paper checklists for those Adair Countians who do not have computers. The checklists can be picked up at my office in the Adair Annex at 424 Public Square, today, and be returned to the Adair County Public Library or they can be returned here and we will get them to the Adair County Garden Club to be reported."
Just Melton reminded everyone that there are just a few hours to work on the project. "When I looked this morning," she said, Columbia, KY was in first place and was about 90 checklists ahead of Charlotte, NC. It goes to show what we can do as a community when we all work together."

A Challenge: Make this GBBC day count for Sue Stivers

By Doug McCammish
Adair Countians! Adair County is doing really well nationally in the "Great Backyard Bird Count." Today is the last day!

It may seem odd to you, but this kind of recognition can result in additional visitors to our area, which means business and jobs, not to mention the fun you can get from watching and counting the birds.

Please make this last day "count" in honor of Sue Stivers and for Adair County.

Please take time to count, then find the website in Columbia Magazine to submit your 15 minute observation checklist(s).Although not a seasoned "birder," it seems like on a snow day like today, you could scatter some seeds across the top of the snow and get LOTs of birds to count? Thanks,- Doug McCammish

Fifteen entries in Birthdays on the15th

At 3:23amCT, Monday morning, February 15, 2010, there were 15 entries listed on the Birthdays. There are some very special people with anniversaries and birthdays, as well as In Memory Birthdays.

We'd like to call attention to just one. It stands out today with a photo, which accompanies the In Memory Birthday of an Adair County war hero, William Coy Turner, who died in the war in Vietnam. The photo is an exception to a rule we now have. We don't run birthday photos unless there is an extremely special situation which warrants posting one. See Celebrations

If we've missed anyone in the list, it's an oversight. Additional listings will be added during the day. To send an Anniversary, a Birthday, or an In Memory Birthday, just use any Contact/Submit button. Remember to send a link to an obituary, if it's available on ColumbiaMagazine.com, for In Memory Birthdays.

Tony Harvey: Duck is immature female Canvasback

About: Birds of KY: Adair County duck flummoxes the experts

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The best that I can make out on this species would lead me to say this is a Immature female Canvasback. The one feature that stands out is the very dark beak and the slope along the top edge. They're fond of inland shoreline waters,as well lakes and reservoirs. I'm speculating that this is where it was spotted. (?)

Concerned about electric bills in Columbia, KY

Bills are high now; and KU is requesting increase

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

My 90 year-old mother's electric bill was $535 last month. She has a modest sized brick home to which extra insulation was added last year. Reading that KU is requesting an increase in rates is of great concern to me. I'm wondering what people on low to moderate incomes with no family to help will do if rates are increased.

Duck is a male Gadwall, Derek Coomer says

It's a relative of the Mallard; while not rare, it is a good find for Adair Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

About: Birds of KY Adair County duck flummoxes the experts

The contrasting light and dark gray of the head and body, the darker patch on the head, and the reddish patch in the middle of the wing identify this bird as a male Gadwall.

The Gadwall is a close relative to the Mallard, and can often be found feeding alongside them during the winter. While not a rare duck, it's still a good find for Adair County.
