Carol Perkins: I Love Love Songs On Valentine's Day, Carol gets out CD's and selects best love songs of each decade. One has her perplexed The next earlier Carol Perkins story, Growing Older By Carol Perkins I am going to design a shirt that says, "I Love Love Songs." I'll have a heart, of course, instead of love; just like the other I love shirts. Valentine's Day will bring out a repertoire of love songs dating back to pre WWII. Somewhere in a lounge, a crooner will be singing, "Embraceable You" or "I'll Be Seeing You." Those of us with parents of that era will almost certainly know these songs. For myself on Valentine's Day, I am gong to download my all-time favorite love songs and make a copy for my children. By then a CD will be as obsolete as an eight track tape! Barbara Armitage asks help on ID for Adair duck Click on headline for story plus photo: Remember to scroll past the Count Cardinal, the Adair Co. GBBC 2010 mascot, to see photo of the mystery duck By Barbara Armitage, President Adair County Garden Club Leave it to me to toss the wrench into Columbia's well greased GBBC machine. So far we have identified 17,145 birds without a hitch. Then I take this photo. Here's what I know about this bird. It's a duck. What we may have here is a totally new species. I'm keeping the location of the "duck" a secret for now. I don't want anyone getting the idea that it might look good stuffed - up on their fireplace mantel. Wendy Burt says that she is totally flummoxed! If any of CM's readers know what kind of "duck" this is I'd appreciate their help. -Barbara Armitage, From the Farm, Tucker's Station, 1535 Bull Run RD, Columbia, KY 2010-02-14 17:11:27 | Comments | Printable version
Pronouncing the name Campbell To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I generally tell who ever is wanting my name that it is Camp Bell so they can get the spelling right. Louisville has always been a name I have a difficult time with because I don''t really know how to say it so that it is correct - I guess "Louie Ville" might be the correct way. s/Ruth Ann - Doug's mother 2010-02-14 16:29:14 | Comments | Printable version

Grateful to Black Lions; grateful they made it home About: Pride of Black Lions gathers in Columbia KY It's great to see these fellows get together and have a good time. Many of us forget that their ties are imbedded in war and awful times. While we are very grateful for the fight for the cause of freedom they have given, we are just as grateful they made it back home to encourage us all. More than 50,000 did not. I thank Betty (Ollestad) so much for her giving so much back to this community. She has been so nice to so many people and I appreciate her so very much. To all of the Black Lions and everyone else who has served this great country so well over the years, Thank You. Because of people like you, America is still free. s/Mark Hale 2010-02-14 11:28:44 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Centuries ago the system of self-denial for Lent (especially giving up meat) was quite formal and compulsory, strictly regulated by church authorities. Folks, it is pronounced Kambul; Doug says About: Question The proper pronunciation of Campbell Most of us "Campbells" around these parts would prefer to hear the "b" sound at least, mumbled; but not the "p." Campbell is one of those names that is seldom spelled correctly. By the way, Ed, is Waggener pronounced as two syllables or three? And why do you need both those "g." Thanks, s/Doug Kambul Thanks. I'll pronounce it "Kambul" throughout my next 170 years. As for your other question, We - the Eds - pronounce Waggener with two syllables. I'm not real sure how all the Ralph Roys say it, or the Dans. We Waggeners have a very few - but a majority, I think, who make three syllables out of the family name. The more pretentious come down hard on the second syllable. But then, really good panting preachers can get three syllables out of "gee-uh-sus," and the truly great ones can get four - the equivalent of super Maria Callas operatic trills. The second g is an adornment, like the judicial center rotunda, serving very little purpose other than making a stab at improving the aesthetics, I guess. -EW 2010-02-14 08:06:54 | Comments | Printable version

Question: The proper pronunciation of Campbell Ed, I had a teacher in junior college who made a big point that her name (Margaret Campbell) was pronounced "KAMel." Any comment on this? s/Robert H. Stone Mr. Stone: Thank's. That's correct so far as I know. The proper mumbllzation of this highly regarded name is "camel." For Adair Countians, it's "Camelsvul." Never Campbellsville. As you well know, Louisviliians are very proud of their speech; they say "Shev-ul" Road, not Shelbyville RD, for instance. Unfortunately, our native tongue is a dying speech. With all the influx of Born Again Adair Countians, we are having scarcely any time to process them through the assimilation academy, much less surgically immobilize their upper lips so they talk right. 2010-02-14 03:14:17 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
