The Fashionable Columbian:
Socks can make such a quiet, profound statement

About: Green Socks make a statement. But what?

Ed,

As you are well awaire these socks are only the tip of the iceberg in this very well dressed gentleman's cache of fine duds.

It is a puzzle to me that in a seemingly dire way, you are making an effort to bring light to this statement of attire.

My friend, E.H. Lepiarczyk, justly brings us to bear the quiet, profound statement that a simple pair of socks can bring.

Surely you could have shown more compassion in your questions of these beautiful GREEN socks.

After all, you are the only person I have ever seen photograph his food prior to consumption!

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I like the green socks; green is my favorite color. I would like to know where to buy green socks like the ones featured on Columbia Magazine's fashion page.

Polish men especially like wearing distinctive and unusual socks. I bought some terrific socks in Spain as well.

Things are going far better than we could have ever anticipated. Our 15 minutes of fame has lasted to 10:31amCT, at which time:
  • Columbia, KY was the number one community in North America in the GBBC's checklist
  • Columbia, KY, was the number one community in North America, in numbers of species reported, and Billy Joe Fudge has not yet reported the Pileated Woodpeckers he saw at Northwestern Products
  • The Kentucky State Bird, the Northern Cardinal was the most reported species
  • The State of Kentucky was the number 8 state or province
  • And Kentucky was the number two state in numbers of birds reported. Some must have seen some flocks of starlings - though we hope it was just a report of Goldfinches at Tucker's Station

From Saudi Arabia: What is Birds OK

Links to 300+ Birds of Kentucky (Birds OK) photos

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

What is Birds OK? What is the website to see the 300 Pictures? I have enjoyed all of the bird pictures here in Saudi Arabia. It adds color to my day. Looking forward to being in Columbia next month. Hope there are some beautiful birds left to see.

Sincerely,
Pat Wiggins
Adair Co. abroad in Dhahrain
Thanks, Pat Wiggins. Good to know you'll be here soon! Links to 300+ Birds of Kentucky (Birds OK) photos is a perhaps feeble attempt to shorten the "Birds of Kentucky" acronymically. It's CM (ColumbiaMagazine.com) for the links to the 300 plus bird photos. We are trying to talk more like the bureaucrats who use acronmyns to obfuscate in public meetings. -EW

Buy American: Is it worth paying the cost?

About: Wants list of American made products posted

It's a common mistake these days that a lot of previous "American-made" products are no longer made in our great nation.

Unfortunately, a good majority of production companies have decided that these items can be made/produced for a fraction of the cost in countries like Mexico, Pakistan, China, etc.

This, of course, fattens-up the purse of the parent company here in the good ol' USA, while damaging our economy and greatly reducing the amount of job opportunities for Americans.

When you think about it, is it really worth paying the cost?

s/Dave Burton

A note: Putting "American-Made" into a search box at Bing, Google, or Yahoo brings up many links. But we found none to be useful. -EW

The Great Backyard Bird Count 2010 is underway!

At 7:50amCT, Friday, February 12, 2010, Adair County had at least a moment of glory as the community was No. 1 in the Nation! (-With just a little help from the alphabet)
At 8:36pmCT, Friday, February 12, 2010, Adair County was in sole possession of First Place, (Alphabet or No Alphabet) enjoying fame not enjoyed here since Thanksgiving Day 2009 or the Great Freeze of 1961.

It's simple and it's fun. Many already know how to use the links from ColumbiaMagazine.com to make the simple reports.

Or, if you don't have a computer, visit or call, these Checklist Help spots:
  • The Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, where you can get help imputting checklists on computers. And, where all birding material from Birding 101 is available
  • Call Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979, or contact any member of the Adair County Garden Club.
If your organization, church, business, or school group is participating or offering help with the Great Backyard Bird County 2010, please let us know using the Contact Form with this story.

Last year, Columbia, KY 42728 made Adair County the number one birdwatching community in Kentucky, with a 23rd ranking in the Nation (well, all of North America). This year, Barbara Armitage and Wendy Burt of the Adair County Garden Club see the county in the Top 10 in the U.S.

  • To submit your checklists in the Great Backyard Bird Count CLICK HERE
  • To check the Top Ten Lists in the Great Backyard Bird Count CLICK HERE
  • To check rankings of checklists in Kentucky CLICK HERE
Dedicated Adair County GBBC bird counters will be doing 3-4 fifteen minute checks on the species in their own backyards, and sending checklists for each period.

As always during this period, we'll be hoping for more Birds of Kentucky photos. There are now over 300 beautiful pictures of the birds in our area in Birds OK, but that's not nearly enough.

(ADV) Fish Fry, improved hushpuppies, tonight at Hardscratch

Ed,

Please let everyone know, if "Global Warming" doesn't cause us to get snowed out or frozen to death, we will be having Catfish and good times in the Village of Hardscratch this Friday night. We have replaced our old hushpuppies with homestyle hushpuppies made from the same meal we use in our Catfish breading. The meal is made in the only stone grinding process still in use in KY. I always thought our hushpuppy was the weak link in the meal, but these new ones are great.

Thanks for all you do,

s/Ken Hill
