To make it easier to distinguish between what's news and what's advertising, ColumbiaMagazine.com will be making the following distinction:
1) If the announcement is by a non-profit and meals or food items are offered for a donation with no minimum, the announcement will be considered for free publicity. If advertising is purchased from any media, announcement of the event is advertising on this site, as well. Free donations only news items are accepted with minimum descriptions such as "Ribeye Supper." Detailed menus are paid advertising.

2) If the announcement includes the offer of meals or products for a fixed price, the announcement is advertising, and would be accepted on a paid basis only. This applies to commercial, for profit establishements and non-profit organizations.
We hope this clarifies what we consider advertising and what we continue free. ColumbiaMagazine.com ads get wonderful results, and the rates are very reasonable. If there are questions when submitting an announcement, please contact us using the Contact Form with this announcement.

Taking time off to hear Dr. Jann Aaron at 11pmCT

About: Dr. Jann Aaron book signing this morning at Lindsey Wilson

To the editor:

I already had arranged to take off from work to listen to Dr. Jann. I worked with Dr. Jann back in the 80s at the hospital. I did not realize she was married to Dr. Baughman. It will be an added treat to speak with him, too.

Thanks,

s/Rick Wilson

Dr. Jann Aaron book signing this morning at Lindsey Wilson

Dr. Jann Aaron will be on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College at Cranmer Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Columbia, KY, at 11amCT, this morning, Thursday, February 11, 2010, to talk about her book, Open Heart: Returning Home to Practice Medicine. Copies of the book will be available. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to support The Healing Place, a network of social services which offers men's and women's shelters for the homeless.

The stories in the book, though not meant to be factual, are based on real people and real situations, the author says. The book created intense interest in Columbia when first released.

Dr. Aaron is accompanied on the trip by her husband, Dr. Henry Baughman, a Stanford, KY native, who is well known in his own right for his work in establishing emergency medical services throughout the nation. He is a retired Western Kentucky University professor.

Speaking Out on Buying American Goods

About: Wants list of American made products posted

Personal views
Commentary by Joe Hare

I agree that to compile a list of American made products would be a monumental task. I think it will be up to each of us to be more aware of the products that are American made and to purchase more of them.

I recently read an article that someone wrote after considering this very quandary and after doing some comparison with one of the big box stores and their local hardware store on several items. The box store selling made in China products and the local hardware selling American made, brought forth quite surprising results. On several items they found that the American made was less expensive.

Enjoyed Peggy Spoon photo: My Neighbors Cat

About: Birds of Kentucky: My Neighbor's Cat

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Photo and title made me laugh. Thanks, Peggy Spoon.

Because of all your coverage, I went to the Birding 101 class on Saturday AND copied the forms for others to do that don't have internet access.

s/Pam Dailey

Thanks. There's a triple wow for Peggy Spoon's delightful photos. I attended Birding 101 and thought the faculty, Wendy Burt and Barbara Armitage were superlative. The easiest way to report Great Backyard Bird Count checklists is still online, but printed forms for few without internet access could give a tremendous boost to Adair County's effort this year. -EW

KY Labor Cabinet has required labor posters free of charge

Copies of the posters are free online. Telemarketing scheme reportedly asks as much as $89.00 per poster! Printed copies of the posters are also free from KY Labor cabinet. Links to free posters below

From Kentucky Labor Cabinet

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet has received complaints of telemarketers attempting to sell workplace posters with the false claim that the Commonwealth no longer provides workplace posters free of charge.

The telemarketers warn that large fines can be issued for failure to display the posters. They then offer to sell the required posters for a fee, reportedly as high as $89.00 per poster. Dont pay unnecessary fees to companies telling half truths!

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet offers free downloadable copies of each workplace poster required by the Commonwealth. The posters can be accessed by visiting labor.ky.gov and clicking links under the Mandatory Posters in the bottom right corner of the webpage. Preprinted posters are also available by calling the Department of Workplace Standards at (502) 564-3534.

Federal Department of Labor posters are available for free download from the Department of Labor at U.S.Department of Labor. Exact posting requirements will vary by industry. Businesses are advised to contact the Kentucky Labor Cabinet and U.S. Department of Labor with questions and to learn which workplace posters they need.
