Birding 101: Practice of birdwatching can be cheep - or not

2010-02-07 - 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Barbara Armitage, her presentation on providing habitat for birds can be very cheap, as beautifying a fence row by letting it grow up, to a fairly expensive one, getting a store-bought Purple Martin condo. Admitting that she had paid $400 for an 18-gourd model which is supported by a telescoping stainless steel pole, a member of the Birding 101 class said that, "I didn't do that, but it's worth it." He said that he had started with two gourds and has three dozen. There's nothing like going out in the yard and having a first cup of coffee and listening to them sing." The magazine article Barbara Armitage is displaying is from Kentucky Living magazine in its February 2010 issue. February is the month Purple Martins return to Kentucky, according to the article. As Barbara Armitage would say, "They're coming here to be counted."

B.J. Fudge, the Man of Ideas, comes up with grandest one, yet

Is anybody out there listening?
About: Record enrollment at Bird University

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

A lot of great photos on CM today.

Looks like the Birding 101 was a tweet success and in Adair County, isn't it great?

A grass roots movement

Another monumental Birding success that is an example of a truly "grass roots movement" which might very well be a catalyst for enabling our community to see those bus loads of National, International and of course, Canadian Tourists become migratory and visit us annually and often.

Maybe this could be our festival. We could have a Bird Walk beginning at dawn, then every two hours all during the day on the first Saturday in January, March, May, July, September, and November. This means that visitors would begin pouring into town on Friday and maybe not leave until Sunday.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Infatuation - a sonnet

infatuation

a sonnet by Robert Stone
Time was when love for me was all unknown
and I would jest that such did not exist
but then one day a day that seemed a clone
of other days there came an unseen twist.

My eye was restless waiting for a sight,
my ear was keen to hear the faintest sound,
my heart was fluttering unsure what might
be right or wrong and so in doubt fast bound.

These feelings for another then I thought
were love for only these had seized my heart
but year by year I still am slowly taught
to label false and seek the truthful part.

Infatuation is a ghost that fades
but will not disappear into the shades.

- Robert Stone, 7 February 2010

Joneses also endorse swim team for ACHS

Says it would be another way to help students stay fit
About: Wonders if natatorium will mean swim team for ACHS

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

We think a swim team would be great for Adair County. It would be a way for our students who may not be good at other sports, but like to swim, to get involved. It would also be another way for students to get fit while they have fun.

We hope the Adair County Board of Education agrees with you (with Felicia Morgan. -CM) and works on a swim team. Swimming is one of those sports you can use your entire life. A lot of interesting jobs like search and rescue dive teams or underwater retrieval experts were on their school swim teams as young people.

The message that always comes too soon: the death of a child

Introduction by Robert H. StoneWhen death comes, words tend to fail us. And we are amazed when a parent can put a message together like the one that follows.

James was only 27 when the automobile accident happened in Davidson County, Tennessee.

An email sent out by Van T. Walworth on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 9:59 AMRobert H. Stone

The message that always comes too soon:
the death of a child

By Van T. Walworth

My son James Walworth is killed in a car accident.

The person on the other end of the phone said "Your son, James Walworth has been killed in a car accident" ... Late Thursday night, February 4th, 2010 ... these were the words we heard ... followed by the additional news that his wife (our daughter-in-law) was also injured in the accident and was in an emergency room somewhere.

Kentucky Color: Pignut Hickory

One never knows what unusual formation one will find in nature

When you look at the photo accompanying this Kentucky Color, you wonder: Pignut Hickory or long-towed elephant foot? It is an unusual root formation. You never know what you're gonna see out in a hardwood forest during the winter. When the trees are foliated the greenery overpowers our ability to distinguish detail. We've often heard that you can't see the forest for the trees but I believe more often than not, we can't see the trees for the forest.

Carol Perkins: Growing older

Growing old is not easy, especially if a person has become invisible somewhere along the way, Carol Perkins observes in this touching account of the behavior two uncaring adult children
The next earlier Carol Perkins story is The New Year

By Carol Perkins

Although the lab at Graves Gilbert Clinic was overflowing, my mother and I found two empty seats and waited for her turn for lab work. Across from us sat a woman just about my age and her mother, and next to me was a man and a woman I later learned was his mother-in-law. Both elderly women were called back at the same time, and that is when a conversation began between the remaining two caretakers.

I Started to talk about John Sandford

A couple of weeks ago I started to write about the new John Sandford novel Rough Country with its detective Virgil Flowers.

I got distracted by Sandford's reference to a musky fishing tournament wherein he promises to make "musky fishing out to be a much less stupid activity than it actually is."

That headline makes it sound like I'm going to drink a gallon of Pepto Bismol. I can assure you that isn't the case. A Pink Lady is a volunteer at the local hospital. They deliver magazines, read to patients, help out at fund raising events, etc.

For the last several years I have thought about volunteering (key word-thought). Last year I took the first step. I went in and asked what I needed to do to sign up. Jan, the lady in charge of the program, couldn't have been sweeter.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Black History Month, More sports history

Another Angle. This essay "Carter G. Woodson, Black History Month, and More Sports History" was first published 12 February 2006 in the Hart County News-Herald
To see other articles by this author, enter "Rev. Joey N. Welsh," or "Another Angle," in the searchbox. The next earlier essay posted on ColumbiaMagazine.com is Carter G. Woodson, Black History Month, and Some Sports History

by The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the historian who was father of Black History Month, never shied away from brutal honesty even as he advocated the celebration of America's diverse racial heritage in 1926. The shelves of the local video store have a couple of sports-related films that do some unflinching truth-telling as well as some entertaining celebration. I suspect Dr. Woodson would have liked both films, but for different reasons.
