Armed with new bird book, M.E. Lewis challenges gender of Pileated

Says Lawrence Hamilton's woodpecker lacks red mustache
About: Birds of Kentucky: Pileated Woodpecker

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I think this is a Woodette not a Woody Woodpecker. When I look in my "Birds of Kentucky, field guide" that my sweet husband bought for me at Day and Day feed store ($12.95) yesterday, this seems to be a female Pileated Woodpecker because it does not have a red mustache that I can see. Maybe wrong so you can correct me if I missed it.

s/M.E. Lewis
Some of my birdwatching friends agree with you, some with Lawrence, and I stand with my friends. Now the only way we know to settle this is to go to Birding 101, at 10:30amCT, at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY, with Wendy Burt and Barbara Armstrong. They can settle it. -EW

John Nall: Kentuckians do not need cap and trade

About: Gov Beshear: Future energy security depends on prudent coal use

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Good article, but it did not give the President's response. Unless I am mistaken, in an interview, many months ago, the President said if cap and trade were passed, electric bills would "skyrocket." Kentucky families just don't need that to happen in this present day economy.

    Gov. Beshear:
Future energy security depends on prudent coal use

News and opinions from Gov. Steve Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY - In a meeting with President Barack Obama today, Governor Steve Beshear told the President that coal is a critical component in the nation's energy policy, and warned that abrupt changes in coal regulations would balloon energy costs and cripple manufacturing industries. Gov. Beshear joined other governors in Washington, DC, to discuss energy policy with the President.

"The current focus on coal is not just a Kentucky issue, it's not just a coal-state issue, it is a national issue," said Gov. Beshear. "The future of our nation's energy security and economic development depends on our ability to continue using our coal resources, our most abundant, reliable, and low-cost energy source."
