Question: Will any polls be serving lunch?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Considering the number of candidates running for office, it is going to take a while to vote. Are any of the voting locations planning on serving lunch?

A small guy like myself might get hungry before choosing between that many people.

s/Rickie Williams

Good question: Over at the Annex, they didn't know of any polling places planning to serve lunch, but it is a great idea, particularly if election day lunch is free. They didn't know of any rule against walking in with a sandwich in your pocket; the election workers do that, and under the Supreme Court's one-man, one-sandwich rule, it would only be fair to let voters carry sandwiches to polling places as well, just clean up your cracker crumbs. -CM

Deadline to file for primary: 4pmCT, Today, Tues., Jan. 26, 2010

The filing deadline for Adair County party nominations subject to the May 28, 2010 primary election is TODAY, Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at 4pmCT, in the office of Adair County Court Clerk Sheila Blair, Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY.

At 4pmCT, Friday, January 22, 2010, 60 candidates had filed for local offices in Adair County. That's a large number, but still fewer than the 65 who had filed in 2006.

Candidates filing to run as independents have a, later filing deadline April 1, 2010, at 4pm local time. From the Secretary of State's website, it is:
"Last day for independent candidates, excludes candidates for KRS 118.367(1) federal office and candidates for mayor or legislative body in 4 p.m. cities of the second to sixth class participating in partisan elections, to file a statement-of-candidacy form with the same office at which nomination papers are filed (not later than April 1 preceding the day fixed by law for holding of general elections for the offices sought. If filing office is closed on April 1, form may be filed on next business day)."
Candidates for city offices may file now, but they have a later deadline, August 10, 2010, at 4pmCT.

Countdown to Great Backyard Bird Count, Feb. 12-15, 2010 is on! 17 DAYS TO GBBC

Birds of Kentucky: Gray Catbird

2008-07-10 - Columbia, KY - Photo By Pen. The BIRD THAT MEOWS: This beautiful backyard bird likes dense foliage and often gets the highest perch. Its usually high vantage point is likely the reason for the term "sitting in the catbird seat," or having the seat with the best view, or "sitting pretty." Catbirds mimic other bird calls, and even tree frogs, but their mimicry is not so complex as that of a mocking bird. Besides their beauty, they are admired for their feistiness and fight.
