A boy and his bear

2010-01-24 - Louisville, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. When Ev explained that he needed the bear to help him sleep, his Mema understood that this was, indeed an urgent need, not a casual whim. The bear's store ransom was paid. And he has become a member of the family. While it was Ev's turn to nap, the bear stayed awake, and kept the place free of the pooks which might have come around, were there no bear there.

Mesonet sites reveal differences in Kentucky climate

News from Western Kentucky University

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Two Mesonet stations in southern Kentucky are providing valuable insights on the effects of topography on localized climate.

Kentucky Mesonet stations in Metcalfe and Cumberland counties are located about 20 miles apart, but their locations reveal distinct contrasts in weather and climate, according to Dr. Stuart Foster, director of the Mesonet and the Kentucky Climate Center at Western Kentucky University.

The Metcalfe County station is located 5 miles west of Edmonton at an elevation of 1,002 feet. The plateau site is one of the higher points in the region, typical of the terrain in western Metcalfe County and eastern Barren County.

The Cumberland County station is located 3 miles west of Burkesville at an elevation of 551 feet. This site is in the broad valley near Marrowbone Creek, typical of many populated, agricultural areas of Cumberland County.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Who is keeping whom? - a sonnet

Who is keeping whom?

a sonnet by Robert Stone
My friends had asked me, can you stay with her
while we are visiting our former home?
For more than one whole day the rations were
untouched but gone at last in unseen roam.

The outdoors called and into yard we went.
The fence seemed good enough to keep us in
but she was called to follow scent to scent
and I eternal watch did there begin.

How many walks we took along the road.
How many times we rested side by side.
How long to hesitate while hurry slowed.
How far to wander letting her decide.

But on her final walk she was alone
and I in tears recalled past pleasures known.

- Robert Stone, 24 January 2010
My tribute to Prancer, a little rat terrier who owned a couple of my friends- Robert H. Stone

Kentucky Color: Eastern Wahoo Orange on Mayne Lane

Oddly, leaves are still holding on in January, to Columbia, KY, plant, which is supposed to be deciduous. Writer warns that seeds are poisonous and not to be confused with those of "Strawberry Bush"

No, this isn't "Hearts a bursting" sometimes called "Strawberry Bush" or "Burning Bush". Strawberry Bush has bumpy, rough seed pods which open in September and October and I have never seen them hang on this long. The seeds are very red.

Eastern Wahoo has smooth seed pods and orange to pale red seeds and they will hold on well into winter according USDA literature.

The next earlier Carol Perkins story is The Caretakers

    By Carol Perkins

The New Year is near and once again, I don't know where Time went. Seems as if all of us were discussing a new century and then SWISH- nine years have gone by. When I was young, Time stood still, moving like a turtle with me on its back. Not anymore.

Time was once not as fleeting. Sometimes, it even dragged along, especially those endless days of school, moving in and out of classes to bells every hour. The time between summer and fall was also much longer. Seasons now blend into each other. I barely get out my winter clothes until it is time to put them away.

Thanks to the people of Columbia for earthquake relief giving

Sparksville Church finds an amazing outpouring of love

    To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Members of the Sparksville Nazarene Church were at the Columbia Walmart, Saturday, January 23, 2010, collecting supplies to send to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

We are so grateful to the members of this community who gave from their hearts to help those who are suffering. There was an amazing outpouring of love from so many people. It was such a blessing to see the love and concern for the people of Haiti.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all those who donated to the cause. We would also like to thank Walmart for allowing us to collect items. God Bless each of you and please continue to pray for the people of Haiti. They still have many challenges ahead of them. Again we want to thank you for the support that so many of you showed for them.

    Thank you,
