Poetry by Robert H. Stone: New Beginnings, a sonnet

New Beginnings
- a sonnet by Robert Stone
So time is marching on or dragging by
or some such figure speechwise so we say
but time is just a combination sly
of comes together and of goes astray.

Both those we meet and things we happen on
require a constant here and now response
for change is always sure as is the dawn
of seriousness and of nonchalance.

Yes time is what we piece into our quilt
of what we chose to do and not to do
and it will be our badge of thoughtless guilt
and thoughtful kindnesses for all to view.

Each instant new beginnings are at hand
to weave our covering strand by strand.
- Robert Stone, 17 January 2010

Carol Perkins: When I was a kid

Child of the 60s remembers how boring hearing how it was in elders' day. Now she herself pontificates about superiority of humanity in her day, even though she comes to a conclusion we endorse. -CM
The next earlier Carol Perkins story is The Caretakers

By Carol Perkins

When I was a kid....! How many boring stories have we imposed on our children about how things used to be? "When I was a kid, a Coke cost a dime." Yes, it did, but the minimum wage was also $1.50.

I catch myself pontificating about school. "When I was young, no kid would sass a teacher." No, not unless he wanted the hide worn off his backside. A few of my classmates can still feel the sting of the principal's paddle. I broke out in a sweat when I saw it hanging in his office.

Tom Chaney 17 Jan. 2010, No. 237: Minnesota Dreaming

Minnesota Dreaming

While I was living in Iowa and pretending to teach young folks about theatre, it fell that I had an invitation from a student and his father to head out to Calm Lake near Atikokan, Ontario.

I was promised walleye and pike and bass.

Now I had fished in the lakes of Hart County -- caught my first fish in the freshwater lake, read "farm pond," out on the Munfordville-Glasgow road near what is now the Horse Cave International Airport. If memory serves me aright the fish was a carp and it measured about six inches.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Can we get along here?

When I was in college I attended a high school production of the 1938 Rodgers and Hart musical, The Boys From Syracuse. The little brother of one of my campus chums was in it. We knew him because he was sometimes on campus with his older brother at movies and other events, and a bunch of us went to a performance to be supportive and cheer him on.

Chuck Hinman IJMA 317 : Ice Cream, Ice Cream

It's Just Me Again No. 317: Ice Cream, Ice Cream
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story: Predicament in Tulsa. Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

By Chuck Hinman

I don't know about you, but if it hadn't been for the universal popularity of homemade ice cream, growing up in the "dirty thirties" would have been pretty dreary.

Everything possible was going wrong, especially for great plains farm families. We lived in Gage County, Nebraska. For example, after the Great Depression there was year after year of droughts, not a cloud in the sky with daytime temperatures reaching as high as 115 degrees. If that wasn't enough to melt spirits, there was a succession of insect plagues, insects like grasshoppers and locusts, voraciously gobbling up anything green that tried to grow in unbelievable arid conditions. The winds became incessantly cruel and blew precious top-soil so that days turned into nights because the sun was blotted out with dust blowing high in the sky. The flying dust combined with jillions of insects filling the air as they migrated to an area not already ravaged. It was a time of Hell on earth!

A kindred Spirit: Learning about less of me from my children

A beautiful story about the returns from being selfless in concern for others. Click on headline for full story + photo

This month I'm doing my best to focus on the needs of others, to do as the song by Glenn Campbell says "Think a little more of others and a little less of me." All month long at NanaHood (my online blog) I'm writing posts about folks who do things for others. What follows is a story about my daughter.

I have told this story before so please forgive me if you have heard it, but I just had to share it again in honor of "Less of Me Month."

Site lets donor check record of charity

About: Doug McCammish warns to check sites before making donations

Just a note to add to Doug's warning. A good, well-respected site to check all charieties is www.charitynavigator.com. They currently have a list of responsible charities who are active in Haiti. They rate charities one to four stars, four being the top few. You can also check all of the data on each charity including what percent of the money you send actually goes to the program and what percent goes to administration and fundraising. You can also check things like the salaries of the top management - which is pretty enlightening some times.
