Martha Berry suggests UMC Committee on Relief for Haiti gifts

About: Doug McCammish warns to check sites before making donations

The Methodist Church has a very reliable way to donate to any disaster and, now, especially to the people of Haiti. It is through United Methodist Committee on Relief or UMCOR. Every cent of donated funds go to the aid of affected people. Administrative funds come from a budget set up for that purpose and are not taken from the donated money. Money can be donated through www.kyumc.org/haitiresponse or through your local Methodist Church.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Advice from Mary Keltner, Eat butter

Adair Countian Mary Keltner, one of the area's great chefs, will be the darling of local dairy farmers. She loves butter, and writes, "I am vindicated, all of you eating that cruddy pseudo plastic garbage in the tubs! It might make you feel virtuous, but it is not doing your body any favors. I plan to go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and stock up on European butters, and if you are nice, I will share with you..."

She sent a link to "Pass the Butter," a popular item which has been around on the internet for some time, which asks what's "The difference between butter and margarine?" and concludes at margarine is one molecule away from plastic.

There is apparently a lot of truth in the story, and Snopes.com "The Butter Truth" has an entry which analyzes the facts.

At ColumbiaMagazine's main Epicurean Kitchen, only cow butter is used. No oleo margarine. We eat it because it is good. And it's a great side benefit that it helps Adair County dairy farmers, who are now, we hear, becoming much more aggressive in finding new and exciting ways to build the industry and the local economy. -EW

Immediately following the devastating Haiti earthquake, criminals created websites designed to appear as Haiti relief effort donation spots. If you donate through an Internet website, please make sure you know and trust the organization receiving the donation. Information received this morning (Friday) indicates that false Haiti donation websites actually appear in the top 10 sites retreived from a search on that subject. Further technical information can be found at http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=5244&tag=nl.e539. Regards, Doug McCammish.
