Sycamore Springs: Where are all the Blue Jays this year?

By Cynthia Meyer
News from Sycamore Springs

I sit here admiring all the photos of the cardinals on Columbia Magazine, and can not help but notice the absences of Blue Jays.

I have seen Cardinals, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Wrens even a Red Crossbill at my birdfeeder, but no Blue Jays.

Are they all staying in Metcalfe County?

One other thing I was wondering was if anyone else has noticed the occasional Killdeer, or "Killdee," as most southerners call them.

I spotted one Sunday afternoon in the Flatwoods area during this cold snap.

What was odd to me is they usually do not show up until warmer weather, and do not stay here throughout the winter.-Cynthia Meyer

Old Coddger doesn't want gumment involved in paint schemes

About: Leaders need good downtown paint scheme

Commentary from Old Coddger

Well there seems to be a lot of great ideas floating around in this new year. I have to agree with Mr. Norris about liking to see a very busy downtown, as I remember coming to town on Saturday, as a youngster, and doing all the shopping for a least a week. There was parking around the circle of the courthouse as well as in the four corners as it is now and you usually had to look for a place to park. Those were the good old days.

Leaders need good downtown paint scheme

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I hope that the leaders of the community can help the empty stores on the Square become occupied to complete the town. But, I hope that the leaders put up rules that keep the buildings with a paint scheme - not some odd paint choice.

The town is keeping up with the times in style.

M. Norris

Maury E. Lewis has splendid idea on Kentucky Cardinal spotting

GBBC JUST 31 DAYS AWAY! Time to get preparedGreat Backyard Bird Count is February 12-15, 2010 details on GBBC with photo of beautiful, breakfast time, alarm clock cardinal by Barbara Armitage
About: Birds of Kentucky Nell Hill Cardinal in the Snow

    To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Maybe we need to have a contest to see who can make the best picture of the Cardinal in the snow. We the readers could vote and the prize would be just knowing you got the most votes.

Since the Cardinal is the state bird it would be a good place to start getting people ready for "The Great Backyard Bird Count."

Or maybe a photo contest of the most Cardinals in one spot. Since I saw the 10 in my yard some people have said they have seen that many and maybe more in their yard.
