Lee County, Floridian set to live in Adair Co. in 2.5 years

Mr. Waggener:

I want to thank you for the wonderful photos and articles from your magazine. My wife and I have decided to make Adair county our retirement destination. We purchased the "Old Moss sawmill" property two years ago from a wonderful man, Glen Thomas of Hart County Realty. We fell in love with the area the moment we set foot in Columbia. I have been living vicariously through your articles and photos. I have lived in Lee County, Florida, my entire life (except for two years on a Virginia tobacco farm and 3 years Army service.) I see that the snow and cold temps have jostled life in Adair as of late; but it looks breathtaking.

From your articles I can't wait to meet the citizens of Columbia and Adair. We have visited on three occasions and I must say that the trip has always been too short. My dream of retirement is to enjoy the farm life once again. After 25 years in law enforcement, my wife and I long for the simple country life we grew up with (she is an Arkansas Razorback.)

I have seen from the photos / articles that several residents have traveled to Lee County - Sanibel Island, specifically. I used to run a charter fishing service around there and have spent many hours coaxing Redfish and Snook out from under mangroves in Pine Island sound. Can't wait to get acquainted with some of your stripers and get that big buck deer. I am marking the days off the calendar. Only 2 and a half years to go. The only thing bad about Adair County is that we are not there enjoying it right now with you.

Mark R. Bess

Wonderful news. You are mighty welcome here, and the sooner, the better. -EW

Comment: Bloomington School, 1930s, photo from Jason Harmon

About: Bloomington School: Snake Creek RD, Adair CO KY 1930s photo from collection of Jason Harmon

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Love the picture in the photo archive, "Bloomington School Snake Creek Rd, Adair Co., in the 1930's." Jewell and Freda are both my aunts. I went to that school in the early 60's. It's so hard to believe....

I came upon this picture just Googling trying to find some pics of the school when I would have been there and some of the Bloomington church. Leslie and Annie Burton were my Grandma and Grandpa. Thanks for putting the pictures out there.

A Kindred Spirit: It's cold outside

The next earlier column by Teresa Kindred: A Kindred Spirit: What is your happiness index

By Teresa Bell Kindred

Baby it's cold outside here in Edmonton!

No school Thursday and Friday for our twins. I woke up this morning and there were three teenage boys draped across two couches and one chair, sound asleep and there were more upstairs. I think (at last count) there were ten guys here and a few more on their way to go sledding.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Thanks, Carol Perkins

The Caretakers

To Carol Perkins, via CM:

Thank you, Carol Perkins, for a wonderful story and thanks, God, for letting MCHS alum Connie Wilson survive her former fellow cheerleaders' loving care. It is always great to read your writing, but this one about three good friends was especially heartwarming.

I had the laptop at the table, reading to Mom and Ed as we enjoyed breakfast and uproarious laughter in a small patch of warm dining-room sunlight on this cold, snowy morning.

It is a relief to know Connie is recuperating nicely and Mom was especially glad, also, that the little dog was rescued.

Go Carol, Connie and Judy!! Go Hornets!

Crime and Punishment by the Quire

Once in a great while I pick up a book from the true crime shelf here in the Bookstore. I have a certain fascination with the lives of those whose chief claim to fame is theft or murder. The fascination generally runs out long before the book is done.

Comment on being saved from Indyucky

About: Utilities merger Writer says Get it done

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

A laugh out loud moment when reading Billy Joe's comment about "Adumbia!!"A similar thought process must have occurred when choosing "Kentuckiana" (in reference to the Louisville/Jefferson County/Southern Indiana metropolitan area). As opposed to "Indyucky."

Predicament in Tulsa: Door locks in a heavy snow

I have lived with the "heartache of psoriasis" most of my adult life. It's the primary reason no one remembers seeing me in a swimming suit.

When I was a young business man, I drove to Tulsa every Saturday morning for a treatment with Dr. Shackelford, a skin-disorder specialist. On one Saturday morning it was snowing heavily when I started home.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh:
To Take A Licking, And Keep On Ticking

Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor: To take a Licking, and Keep on Ticking: This article was originally published in the Hart County News-Herald, 29 January 2006.

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

When I was a child I always enjoyed the commercials for Timex watches hosted by the respected news broadcaster, John Cameron Swayze. I some ways those television ads were a precursor of today's reality shows, though they were much shorter and far more clever.

Time after time Swayze would show a Timex watch being strapped in some odd place -- on a bucking bronco, or on a baton carried by a dolphin through saltwater, on an outboard motor propeller, etc. -- at the end of which a camera close-up would show the watch still functioning. Then came Swayze's catch phrase, "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking."

Poetry by Robert Stone: A villanelle for Lisa Comperry

A Villanelle for the birthday of Lisa Comperry
by Robert Stone
Unsought a softly speaking voice I hear,
remarking on the day and what it brings,
and wonder words bring comfort to my ear.

An earnest passion for a new frontier
is catching images of simple things.
Unsought a softly speaking voice I hear.

Routine is seeking always old austere
but bold imagination has its wings
and wonder words bring comfort to my ear.

The possibilities are far and near
for riding carousels and seizing rings.
Unsought a softly speaking voice I hear.

Enhancing knowledge will expand the sphere
of known as circumstance unknown flings,
and wonder words bring comfort to my ear.

The joy of life outweighs whatever fear
its sorrow bears and future hope it sings,
Unsought a softly speaking voice I hear
and wonder words bring comfort to my ear.

Carol Perkins: The Caretakers

Before settling in to think you'll only enjoy just another standard, hilarious Carol Perkins Metcalfe Countians lost in the city, dog and bone-friend story, be forewarned there is more - much more - in this one.-CM
The next earlier Carol Perkins story is A Second Christmas

By Carol Perkins

The dog shot out the door, down the brick steps, and across three yards before Judy (Wallace Irvin) could yell, "Catch That Dog!"

The story begins when she and I went to stay with our friend Connie Wilson who had just gone through a very serious surgery. Our job was to make sure she was comfortable and pain free, greet the visitors, and take care of the dogs. "You don't have to worry about a thing. We'll take care of you until you don't need us anymore." Those were our words of comfort to her when she told us about her pending surgery.

Lost dog, Grizzley, last seen at Concord Community Church

This notice came in at 7:15pmCT, Saturday night, January 9, 2010.
My Akita-mix dog, Grizzley, was last seen at the Concord Community Church on 704. He has tan/dark golden body fur and a black face. He has a red collar with his rabies tag and a yellow Pet Watch ID #OA115D53OF He is very friendly. Grizzley was recently neutered so has stitches on his belly. It is very urgent for those to be checked for infection as they are not supposed to rip or get wet. He was a Christmas present from a dear friend and I love and miss him very much. If you have seen him, or have him please contact me immediately. He likes car rides so he will likely jump in the car if given a chance. Thank you very much. 378-5644 -Christina O'RourkeTo check on other missing pets, see Animals
