Columbia, Adair Co., KY businesses 1910

By "Jim"

Columbia resident Fred McLean penned the following word snapshot; it appeared in the January 19, 1910 News. Additional information appears in brackets. (Adapted from "A Handsome New Business House: The Russell & Co. Building, 1910, Columbia, Ky." Used with permisssion of the author.)

The corporate limits extend only one-half mile from the court-house, and many families who are town people to all intense (sic) and purposes are not counted. The enumerators say that if the corporate limits were extended the population would reach over one thousand..." The author of this article, Mr. Fred McLean, was, among other things, a sign painter. Upon seeing his optimistic population figures, the thought comes to mind that perhaps he had already "fixed up" signs that read "Columbia, Ky., Contemplated Population 1,500." Just sayin'...]

Carol Perkins: A Second Christmas

The Perkins family enjoys Christmas twice. Once in Metcalfe County and a second one in Texas, and the writer realizes, again, "There is joy in family and I have an abundance of it."

By Carol Perkins

The flurry is over. The Christmas flurry! All that wrapping paper and those pretty bows-trashed. The gifts-lying in boxes in the guest bedroom. Leftover food- lingering in the refrigerator, taking on a life of its own. After-Christmas sales bring the Christmas money out of pockets and into cash registers. Everyone wins. Christmas 2009 is over-for you, but not for me.

Frost Flowers

Billy Joe Fudge remembers that, as a child, frost flowers were referred as "frost bunnies." This photo he took on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at the Chowning Farm on KY 704 in Cumberland County illustrates why. It could easily be mistaken for a small white, Angora pet bunny. It was not until Fudge did some research, last week, that he came to realize that the phenomenon is more frequently referred to as "frost flowers."Photo by Billy Joe Fudge, posted 2009-12-21.
