Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 117: Winter Is Coming

It's Just Me Again No. 117, Winter Is Coming written in November 2007 in Oklahoma, about Nebraska winters, and very appropriate for South Central Kentucky today.
The next earlier Chuck Hinman story, Chuck Hinman, IJMA No.020: A Work of Art Reader comments to CM are appreciated, as are emails directly to Mr. Hinman at: charles.hinman@sbcglobal.net

by Chuck Hinman

Winter Is Coming

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to notice that weather patterns have changed drastically in our lifetime. The most obvious change is that winters are no where near as cold as they used to be.

That is welcome news to those who wear shorts year around. I miss cold weather with snow and ice. "No, I am not part Eskimo." I was born and raised near Wymore, Nebraska, just 300 miles north of where I spent the last 65 years, mostly in Oklahoma. Mom said I was born in a Nebraska blizzard but that has nothing to do with my love of cold weather.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh No. 051: Christmas isn't over yet

Christmas Isn't Over Yet

We prepare for Christmas for a long time, and then the holiday comes and ends so fast. New Year's Day is here, and Christmas is already history, it seems to us. Radio stations play Christmas music intensively on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, then it's back to music as usual. Stores put out their Christmas-related items in the run-up to the holiday as soon as they get rid of their Halloween masks and candy, but by December 26 they are doing their post-Christmas clearance sales.

Tom Chaney No. 235: 3 January 2010, The Evolution of God

Of Writers and Their Books. Tom Chaney book review, The Evolution of God by Robert WrightThe next earlier Tom Chaney book review of Trace by Patricia Cornwell

By Tom Chaney
Email: Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com

The Developing Image of God

Robert Wright writes fascinating and thought provoking books. One reviewer observes that his Moral Animal illuminates "such topics as friendship, monogamy, and xenophobia. Wright linked Darwinian thought to game theory to suggest that human history is moving inexorably toward 'win-win' global amity, that hatred has lost its usefulness in an increasingly interdependent world."

His latest book, The Evolution of God [Little-Brown, 2009], continues the study of the phenomenon of change from the early views of god in various cultures where deities were seen as capricious and cruel through millennia to the early polytheism of the Hebrews, "Thou shalt have no other gods (plural) before me."

Remember the game show Family Feud? Two opposing families would guess what the most popular answers to questions were and then the host would reveal the answers and announce, "And the survey says..." This morning I read some results from a survey that I wanted to share with you. This survey was done by the Gallup Poll and over 175,000 people responded. Basically the survey investigated the well-being of folks in different occupations. In all but two of the categories the profession that claimed the highest level of well-being was.... (drum roll) teachers.
