Catie Bilz Photo Project

Catie Bilz writes:
On January 1, 2010 I will begin a Project 365. I am not sure about whether or not our readers would know about this, so for their sake, I will describe it a little. Project 365 is a photography project in which the photographer commits to taking a one picture a day for the entire year. The content can either have a theme, such as flowers, or merely catalog a day in the life, which is the approach I will be taking. This project will document my travels, including a trip to NYC in January, to Mardi Gras in February, and to Germany in July.

Since I have only been shooting for about a month and a half, I feel that this is a great opportunity for me to get more acquainted with photography and my camera. I think that this project will help me grow as a photographer and help me to become more creative with my subject matter. I will be posting my pictures daily on my flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/catiebilz.

Kentucky Afield Outdoors: More people trapping now

From KY Fish & Wildlife

FRANKFORT, KY - Thousands of Kentuckians once trapped raccoons, beavers, mink, foxes and other furbearing animals. Trapping provided our ancestors with clothing, food and a source of income.

But trapping fell by the wayside as people began moving from the farm to the city. Fur prices declined in the 1980s and thousands of people quit trapping. Kentucky trapping license sales plummeted from more than 7,000 in 1980 to about 600 in 1999.

Now, trapping is making a comeback.

Remembering Jay Wheeler: He was a great uncle

About: Obituary: Jay Wheeler, 80, Adair Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Jay Wheeler was my great-uncle. Carlis Wilson was my father. Jay's sister Blanche, who was my grandma, was a Rowe, but later married a Snead and that was her name when she died. For those who do genealogy it might be nice if the obituary had the information on-line. My dad was big into genealogy and I am sure would have suggested I send this. He truly loved your magazine and sometimes I pull up his articles to reminisce. Thanks so much.

s/Debbie Wilson Bertram

Thanks. We'll post your letter, along with a link to make it easy to see the relationships. Also, for those would would like to read some of the delightful Carlis B. Wilson stories, click on Local history by Carlis B. Wilson.

Tim Bradshaw for Adair County Regional Jailer

By Tim Bradshaw, candidate for nomination for Adair County Regional Jailer,
in the May 18, 2009, Adair County Republican Primary.

I, Tim Bradshaw would like to announce that I am a candidate for Adair Co. Jailer.
I am excited about the opportunity to have a chance to head our jail in the upcoming decade. KY jails face a unique challenge. KY's recidivism rate is now at 42%. The national average is 34%. KY's Program Review and Investigations Committee have proposed several propositions to deal with one of the nation's fastest growing jail and prison population. Some of the proposals have given me some reservations.

John Ford announces for Adair Regional Jailer

ADV PD for By John Ford, candidate for nomination for Adair County Regional Jailer,
in the May 18, 2010, Adair County Republican Primary.

Hi. My name is John Ford and I am a Republican candidate for the office of Jailer of Adair County.

I have been married to my wife Lila Curry for 25 years. We have one son Joshua who is currently in his second year at WKU. I worked closely with Thelbert Curry for about 20 years and we were partners for about 15 years. Thelbert, who received his CPA from Sullivan business school in Louisville, taught me a lot about business, and running the jail is really just running a business on behalf of the county.

With the encouragement of Mike Campbell I went back to school and received my Associates of Applied Sciences degree in computer networking technology, graduating with honors.

Birds of Kentucky, Belted Kingfisher

Widespread along streams and other bodies of water throughout Kentucky, these small birds can usually be heard before they're seen. According to Sibley's, their call is "a very distinctive, long, uneven clattering rattle." They can usually be seen perched on limbs or wires watching for small fish, or flying low along the water.
