Silent Night story brings back precious memories

About: Silent Night by Geniece Marcum.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Christmas memories.....Silent Night was a wonderful story.

Being of an age that I could relate to the story, I could see the characters and story in living color within my imagination.

I so remember those radios with that huge pack of batteries and the wire across the front yard attached to the tall pole with a small insulator at the end of the wire.

Thank you to Jonathan Coffey, Lucas Rowe

Lynn Franklin has warned her about potential motor problems - which occurred just a little over one-half mile away. Luckily, two caring Adair County teens saw her plight, made sure she was okay

By Martha Lacy

Our teens don't get enough praise these days. Seems like most people want to put them down for one thing or another, but I would like to give two boys some praise for being so nice to me the other night.

It was late one afternoon and I thought that my van just needed some antifreeze in it, when I stopped at Lynn's he told me that I must have a head gasket going out on it, but I left and started up Jamestown to pay some bills when I looked back the smoke was so thick I could not tell if there was anything behind me or not.

I made it to the old Walmart Parking lot and two young men pull in behind me and ask me if I knew that my van was smoking really bad and if they could help me or take me some where.

They followed me to my son's so if it stopped they could help.I want to give them a big thank you and let their parents and Adair County know that we still have great kids around here.

Thanks again, to Jonathan Coffey and Lucas Rowe. -Martha Lacy

Christmas memories - Silent Night

This memory was shared from mother to daughter, Geniece Leftwich Marcum to Linda Marcum Waggener, and is a treasured one in our family. It was seen through the eyes of a young Geniece who was observing her mother, Addie Turner Leftwich. The farm on which this memory took place was two miles outside Edmonton behind what is now Bowling Park on the Glasgow Road. Addie was part of the Turner family from Crocus Creek in southern Adair County, whose father Joseph moved them to Metcalfe County, Cave Ridge, where she met a young man named Walter Scott Leftwich and claimed him. Geniece was the youngest of nine children born to Addie and Walter. Her four brothers star in this memory.

"I never hear the song Silent Night without seeing mama standing at the old dining room door drying her hands on her apron, crying.

"Russell had bought one of the first radios to be had in our neighborhood and set it up in the family room.

Unemployment benefits extend for 32,000 in state

Thanks to legislation President Barack Obama signed into law December 19, 2009.

From Gov. Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY - Unemployment benefits set to expire Dec. 31 will continue into next year, keeping more than 32,000 Kentuckians from losing benefits, Gov. Beshear announced today.

President Barack Obama signed legislation Dec. 19 extending the filing deadline for the federally funded jobless benefits from December 31, 2009 to February 28, 2010. The measure also continues the extra $25 a week benefits approved in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Last week Gov. Beshear sent letters to members of Kentucky's Congressional delegation urging them to back any measure designed to further provide a temporary extension of certain unemployment benefits.
